About Yenty
An aristocratic name with a playful, quirky sound, Yenty comes from the Yiddish Yente, which is itself borrowed from the French gentille or the Italian gentile. It appears in the film and musical Fiddler on the Roof, borne by a gossiping matchmaker, and both Yenta and Yente may be used as slang terms among Jewish communities for someone considered a gossip or busybody.
While Yenta and Yente had seen very limited use in the US then, Yenty has faired slightly better and was given to nearly 20 girls in 2024.
Pronounced YEN-tee.
As of October 2026, Yenty ranked #6535 for girls in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #5564 for girls in 2021.
