About Mahasti

A beautiful, lunar choice, derived from Persian, Mahasti was borne by a Medieval Persian poet, considered the first to compose quatrains in her native language. While there is general agreement that the first element comes from māh meaning "moon", there is debate as to whether the second derives from the Persian hastī meaning "existence" or from the Indian satī meaning "virtuous lady".

In more contemporary times, the name may be associated with the Iranian singer who went mononymously as Mahasti and the writer Mahasti Shahrokhi.

Mahasti may additionally be considered a Basque word name, derived from mahats meaning "grape" or mahasti, "vineyard", though it is unlikely to be used in this context.

Pronounced muh-HAHS-tee.
