About Erana

A multicultural choice with a simple and straightforward look, Erana is both a Māori form of Ellen and a Filipino name meaning "new era". In the first case, it ultimately comes from the Greek Helen, usually interpreted to mean "shining torch" or "light", and it is likely this original that the parents of actress Erana James and singer Erana Clark had in mind when naming their daughters.

In the second instance, it is adapted from the masculine name, Eraño, which was invented by Felix Manalo, a Filipino minister and founder of the restorationist church, Iglesia ni Cristo. Inspired by the English words "new era", he used it for his son, to reflect his belief in a new Christian age.

Erana also appears as a place on ancient maps, used for towns in what are now Greece and Turkey.

Pronounced eh-RAH-nuh.
