About Bisaya

Bisaya is typically used to refer to those who speak Cebuano, a language used in the Philippines; however, it may additionally refer to an ethnic group in Borneo. The exact etymology of the name is unknown, though theories include that it comes from Sanskrit to mean "kingdom, realm, or country" or that is refers to Sri Vijaya, the name of an ancient Malay empire.

There is also the possibility that Bisaya is a Yoruba name, used in Nigeria, potentially with the meanings "born to add joy" or "born from joy". Other interpretations and origins are possible, however.

Singer Vanessa White and her partner DJ Emmanuel Lawal chose the name Sage Remi-Bisaya for their son, born in 2026.

Pronounced bee-SY-uh.
