About Agave
A name from mythology that also doubles up as a botanical choice, Agave has its roots in Greek the agauê meaning "high-born, illustrious, admirable". Borne by a daughter of Cadmus and the mother of Pentheus in Greek myth, as a word name, Agave usually refers to a succulent plant with large rosettes of pointed, fleshy leaves. It is popularly used to create the natural sweetener, agave syrup, and to make the alcohol tequila.
The name has seen very occasional use in Indonesia, the US, Mexico, and Papua New Guinea, likely because it is connected to alcohol. Nevertheless, for a fictional character, a middle name, or the very bold namer, it might make an interesting mythological choice, with nicknames Aggie and Ava.
Pronounced uh-GAH-vee.
