Badass Princess Names

photo copyright Lissy Elle

A cartoon in a recent New Yorker features a little girl and her mother surveying Halloween costumes in a shop window. “I want to be whichever Disney princess is the most badass,” the girl says.

Badass princess is an image that not only appeals to contemporary little girls but to their parents when choosing a name.

Like the hipster cowboy names we wrote about recently, badass princess names are appealing not so much because of their sound or their style but because of the complicated image they convey. These are girl names that are both decidedly feminine and rooted in tradition, but are not at all conventional or conservative.  They’re creative and edgy, but not invented or unorthodox like Blue or Bellamy.

Rather, these are names that could be – that in many case are – used for royalty, yet they’re a lot, well, badder than names like Elizabeth and Victoria.

The badass princess names are  classy and sassy, cosmopolitan yet earthy, chic but never trying too hard.  It’s an image that many an urbane parent can embrace for her daughter, and that a little girl can have fun living up to, in Halloween costume and beyond.

Do you like the badass princess style for girls?  What names would you add to or subtract from the list?

I adore Anastasia, Andromeda, Aurora, Beatrix, Celestina, Corisande, Cosima, Frederica, Georgiana, Guinevere, Henrietta, Isadora, Leontine, Magdalena, Maxima, Olympia, Oriana, Petronilla, Raffaela, Romilly, Seraphina, Soraya, Tatiana, Thalassa, Valentina, and Zephyrine.

Ambrosia, Augustina, Delphinia, Elettra, Estelle, Eulalia, Hyacinth, Isolde, Lavender, Magnolia, Maud, and Zenobia are just meh, for me.

I’m definitely not digging Araminta, Delphinia, or Wilhemina and I think Tanaquil sounds like an over the counter cold medicine.

Which princess was Romilly? I love that name and didn’t know there’s princess with this name.

I love the idea of Badass Princess names, but not many of these names resonate with me. I do love Magdalena though! My idea of Badass Princess is elaborate, multi-syllable, decidedly feminine, but with an edge. Some additions to this list would be Hannelore, Ursula, Marguerite, Ariadne, Anais, Junia, Eudora, Lucinda.

Am I the only one that read this title and thought “Xena”? I also think Éowyn should be added. From the list, I love Guinevere, Isolde, and Wilhelmina.

I love lots of these. These I love and think sound like badass princesses:

Anastasia
Andromeda
Augustina
Delphinia
Eulalia
Guinevere
Isolde
Leontine
Magdalena
Romilly
Tatiana
Wilhelmina
Zenobia
Zephyrine

Here’s the ones I think are fine for a princess but don’t sound badass at all:

Estelle — pretty but like an older woman
Henrietta — pretty and nerdy
Lavender — pretty but not too substantial let alone badass
Magnolia — see Lavender
Maud — This is definitely not badass. Old lady and sweet
Petronilla — this sounds like an air freshener
Tanaquil — Nyquils cousin
Valentina — So sweet and pretty but not very badass

Totally agree with @dantea and her list of names that don’t sound badass at all, but I suppose describing a name as badass is highly subjective.

I am not sure I agree with the definition of this list as a combination of “complicated, feminine, traditional, creative, and edgy” as some seem mainly feminine/traditional and others mainly creative/edgy. However several of my favorite names are here…
Isadora
Beatrix
Cosima
Maude
Tatiana
Guinevere
Celestina

Daciana
PRONOUNCED: dah-CHYAHN-ah / dah-chee-AHN-ah (personally, I prefer the four-syllable pronunciation)
USAGE: Romanian
MEANING: Derived from Dacia, the old Roman name for the region which is now Romania and Moldova

To me, the name seems eminently frilly and yet equally funky. I can easily imagine a bad-ass princess named Dachy 🙂

Maud (UK) and Estelle (Sweden) are both names of the latest generation of royal babies, so perhaps they will be the badass princesses of the future 😀

Aurora, especially with the nickname Rory, even though I prefer that name for boys.
Frederica is sweet, nickname Freddie is cool.
Georgiana is great with the Geor-jane-ah pronunciation. The nickname Georgie is really cool.
Maxima nicknamed Max is nice.
Olympia is cute, especially with the nickname Olly.
Raffaela, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!

I love how most of my favorites from this list have boyish nicknames.

From your list I think these are bad ass princess names:
Valentina
Seraphina
Zephyrine
Anastasia
Andromeda
Guinevere
Isolde
Magdalena
Zenobia

I would add:
Natalia
Rosalia
Pandora
Ophelia
Athena
Freya
Sophie
Merida (of course, the epitome of bad ass princessness)

I love:

Araminta
Beatrix
Estelle
Frederica
Georgiana
Henrietta
Olympia
Oriana
Raffaela (although I prefer Raphaela as a spelling)
Romilly
Wilhelmina
Zenobia

I feel like these fall solidly under the category of “trying too hard”:

Ambrosia
Andromeda
Delphinia
Elettra
Petronilla
Zephyrine

And to me, Hyacinth, Magnolia, and Lavender are just not all that badass. Magnolia and Ambrosia in particular always strikes me as too sticky-sweet.

Love this concept!!!
I think my favourites are:
Anastasia
Aurora
Beatrix
Isolde
Seraphina
Tatiana
Wilhelmina (like Willamina spelling more)

I would definitely add:
Natalia
Merida
Rosalia
Athena

I keep a similar list of princess alternatives to offer to anyone considering Isabella or Sophia (because I am so bored with them). It already included Aurora, Celestina, Cosima, Delphine, Elettra, Rafaela and Serafina but I’ll be adding Eulalia, Frederica and Guinevere.

From my list I think these fit:
Anneliese
Aurelia
Lisanne
Lucienne
Madelief
Melisende
Ophelia
Sybella
Teodora

I think that Maud is misplaced and Maxima is much too obvious.

Princess Romilly and Princess Aurora are two badass contenders. I like them both.

“Romilly” because it sounds overtly masculine and hints at the nefarious historical figure Erwin Rommel.

“Aurora” because it sounds like “roar”, with some extra tongue twisting.

Much like the hipster cowboys I love this combo tho the style isn’t mine. I do like araminta, aurora, lavender, and seraphina! Great list!

Gondolin Says:

I actually think Victoria is quite badass! Her name means victory, what more do you want! 😀

From your list, the badass princesses are:
Anastasia
Corisande
Isadora
Oriana
Seraphina
Soraya
Wilhelmina
Leontine would work, but in the Netherlands is kind of a “mum name”.

I would add:

Fiona
Antonia
Portia
Diana
Julia
Atalanta
Annora

As for names less successful:

Our queen mother is called Beatrix, so that’s a “grandmother-name” for me. (Her mother was named Wilhelmina, which I do see becoming pretty badass.)
I also don’t think Guinevere is badass because the Arthurian Guinevere really didn’t make such a strong impression on me, although I do think the name is beautiful.
Other names that I feel don’t necessarily fit the category:

Aurora – Sleeping beauty
Eulalia – Soft, pretty, sweet
Henrietta – Nerdy, smart
Lavender – Lavender Brown from Harry Potter spoiled this one
Petronilla – This would be the name of one of the evil step sisters, not the princess
Romilly – I think it’s trashy, sorry.
Valentina – Soft, pretty, sweet
