Ilithyia Origin and Meaning

The name Ilithyia is a girl's name meaning "the readycomer".

A name so old that it may predate the written word. Ilithyia is, immediately, the Latinized version of the name of the Greek goddess of childbirth and midwifery, but its roots stretch back to the Ancient Minoan civilization, and possibly beyond.

Ilithyia is also, crucially, the name of the one of the main characters on the first two seasons of Starz's Spartacus -- which accounts for the 10-or-so baby girls named Ilithyia each of the past few years. Ilithyia is among the more unusual Greek goddess names still in occasional use.
