Names Ending in R for Boys

Sudhir

Usually reserved as a term of endearment, Sugar has occasionally been used as a given name in the US, with at least 135 girls and 46 boys receiving the name since records began in the 1880s. It was recently used by singer Anne-Marie and rapper Slowthai for their son's middle name, born in 2024 but not announced until 2025.
The singer revealed she chose the name because she developed gestational diabetes when carrying her second baby, Forever Sugar, and went on to describe how that made it the perfect middle name for him.

While Sugar could be a generic nickname for any baby, if you want a name that connects to the pet form, you could always go for Hugh or Hugo, which would lead you to the the Scottish nicknames Shug and Shuggie, or try a name with a sweet meaning (Myron, Pollux, Amai). Alternatively, Seamus, Shay, Shiloh, Samuel, and Sawyer contain some of the sounds.

Bower comes from English surname origins, derived from the Old English word 'bur,' referring to a cottage or dwelling, particularly one in a leafy enclosure or garden. Historically, it was an occupational surname for someone who worked or lived in such a setting. As a first name, Bower has remained quite rare, giving it a distinctive quality. The name evokes verdant, natural imagery of shaded garden retreats and leafy arbors - peaceful, green spaces that provide shelter and beauty. Bower has a strong, masculine one-syllable sound similar to more common names like Bowen or Owen, while offering unique nature-connected symbolism. It appeals to parents drawn to uncommon English names with natural associations.

Barbour is a masculine name that originated as an occupational surname in medieval Britain, referring to someone who was a barber. In historical times, barbers performed various services including haircuts, shaving, and even medical procedures like bloodletting and minor surgeries. As a first name, Barbour is extremely rare, representing the trend of repurposing surnames as given names. The name carries associations with craftsmanship and historical trades. While uncommon as a personal name, Barbour maintains recognition through the popular British clothing brand of the same name. Parents choosing Barbour might appreciate its distinctive English heritage, strong consonant sounds, and connection to traditional crafts, offering a unique alternative to more common surname-derived names like Parker or Mason.

Barbar is an unusual masculine name with several possible origins. It may be related to the ancient Berber people of North Africa, or derive from the Greek 'barbaros,' originally referring to non-Greek speakers. Alternatively, it could be a variant of Barbara, which comes from Greek meaning 'foreign' or 'strange,' though traditionally feminine. In some cultures, particularly Middle Eastern, Barbar might be used as a masculine name with local significance. The repetitive sound pattern gives it a strong, memorable quality. While quite rare in Western countries, the name may have cultural significance in specific communities. Its distinctiveness makes it stand out, though the association with the word 'barbarian' in English might present challenges in some contexts.
