Unique Names that Start With A

Amaranta is the unusual and intriguing Latinate form of the Greek botanical name Amarantha, which connects to an eternal mythical figure. An excellent choice for the parent who wants an A name but wishes to move beyond the usual complement of names from Amelia to Annabel.

Now that the range of names including the modern Emmeline and Amelia -- relatives of each other, but of neither Emily nor Emma -- has become so fashionable, the original root name Amelina is also due up for reconsideration. A lovely, delicate choice, its main disadvantage is that it sounds like a modern elaboration rather than the original name. And perhaps that it will be so often misspelled and mistaken for other forms of itself. But it is a lovely name with deep roots.

When people talk about unique baby names, Apple is often one of the first examples they mention. Apple made international headlines when Gwyneth Paltrow chose this wholesome fruit name for her daughter. Many have called it ridiculous, but we have to admit, we find it appealing enough to list as one of our top cute baby names. Rocker Bob Geldof named one of his daughters Peaches; Banana Yoshimoto is a hipster writer. Another choice in this genre is the luscious Plum, though for different reasons, neither Prune nor Cherry will fly.

The name also has connections to Latin "mirus" meaning "wonderful." Almira has historical usage across several cultures, including Hispanic, Turkish, Arabic, and Eastern European communities. It enjoyed modest popularity in the United States during the late 19th century. The name appears in literary works, including as a character in Handel's opera "Rinaldo." With its melodious sound and multicultural heritage, Almira offers a distinctive yet accessible option with elegant overtones. Its relative rarity in contemporary Western naming makes it stand out while its traditional roots give it substance and history.

The pronunciation of Anthea varies slightly depending on language and location. Among English speakers, it's ANN-thee-uh, while it's Greek and in French, it's AHn-TAY-A.

Notable bearers include Anthea Disney, a high-powered business executive and distant relative of Walt, and Anthea Turner, a TV presenter.
Only 10 girls were called Anthea in the US in a recent year, so if you want to go beyond Azalea, Athena, and Anastasia, you might consider Anthea.

Also spelled as Argos, this name appears in Greek mythology, borne by Odysseus's loyal dog, by a giant creature with a hundred eye, a son of Zeus and King of Argos, and an Argonaut ship builder. The name is associated with vigilance, guardianship, and watchfulness (in relation to the many-eyed creature) and with faithfulness (owing to Odysseus's dog being the first to recognize the returned hero).

In the UK, this name may feel far too close to the retailer Argos, though elsewhere, it could be a shiny, mythological choice, similar in sounds to August, Atlas, and Atreus. Six boys were called Argus in the US in a recent year.
