Athens is one of the newer place names, used for both baby boys and girls. The Greek city got its name from Athena, goddess of wisdom and courage.

Athens

An epic sci-fi name, drawn from Frank Herbert's Dune novels, Atreides appeared in the US stats for the first time in 2024, with parents likely drawing inspiration from the recent film adaptions, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, among many other famous faces.

Uses as the surname of one of the central characters in Dune, Brian Herbert, son and biographer of Frank Hebert, has noted that the name was inspired by the mythological Atreus, giving it the meaning "child of Atreus", or, perhaps more poetically, "child of fearlessness".

A bold choice, but one with a solid, literary background and ties to mythology, Atreides also benefits from sounding like a number of other names on parents' radar, such as Ares, Atlas, Atticus, and the aforementioned Atreus itself.

Appealing comedian Aidy Bryant -- born Aidan -- put this energetic nickname on the map when she joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2012. Each of the years since then has seen a handful of baby girls given Aidy as a full name. Which makes sense: It combines the elegance and trendiness of the whole Ada/Adaline/Adelaide family with the retro (almost rockabilly?) appeal of names like Hattie. Expect to see it more going forward as Bryant's star continues to rise.

Adithi is a feminine name of Indian origin, particularly popular in Southern India. The name derives from Sanskrit roots and is closely related to 'Aditi,' which means 'boundless,' 'unlimited,' or 'free.' In Hindu mythology, Aditi is an important goddess figure who represents the infinite cosmic space and is considered the mother of the gods. Adithi offers a slight variation with the additional 'h,' creating a more phonetic spelling while maintaining the name's cultural significance. This beautiful name has gained popularity in the Indian diaspora worldwide as families maintain cultural connections through meaningful names. Adithi combines spiritual depth with a gentle, flowing sound, making it both significant and aesthetically pleasing. The name suggests qualities of freedom, expansiveness, and divine feminine energy.

This Ethiopian boy name looks like a shortening of popular Addison, but has separate roots. Nonetheless, with Addison's popularity, Addis would fit in while standing out as a boy's name in English-speaking countries. Addis means "new", as seen in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, meaning "new flower".

Jason is the better known name and the more familiar mythological figure, but if you're wanting something rare, Aison (or Aeson) could make an interesting choice. Borne by the father of Jason (and a king of Thessaly), there are two varying myths around Aison, one being that he was imprisoned by his half-brother Pelias, and the other that he was killed by Jason's wife Medea and brought back to life again as a young man.

This particular form is notably associated with the red-figure vase painter and is traditionally pronounced as EE-sohn. The exact meaning is unknown, though there is a chance that it may relate to Iason, the source of Jason, which means "to heal".

Aison has been appearing in the US stats since 2005, though whether it's being used because of its Greek origins or whether parents are choosing it as a mix of Aiden, Kaison, Mason, and similar, is hard to know. As such, you may hear it said as AY-suhn or EYE-suhn too.
