Where does Gwen end and Jennifer begin? Gwenifer may feel like a mashup of the two names but it is a genuine Cornish name for girls that makes clear the relationship between Gwen and Jennifer, themselves both variations on Guinevere.

While we don't see many parents adopting Otter as a name for their own babies, Zooey Deschanel put this one in the lexicon when she used it as a middle name for her adorably-named daughter Elsie Otter. Even in the celebrisphere, Otter is one of the most unique baby names we've heard.

Otter

Painter is among the most creative choices in this very fashionable category of names, with a particularly pleasant sound. Whereas most occupational names conjure up physical labor, this one feels like a gateway to the arts.

Actor Chad Lowe used it as the middle name of his daughter Mabel.

Austin Powers famously said "Danger is my middle name," and for more and more children this is ringing true. Some babies are receiving Danger as their first name, in the style of lively word names like Wilder, Cannon, and Rebel.

Occupational names are hot right now, and Doctor has recently reemerged as an option. It's also an honorific name, a la Bishop, King, and Princess. It's never been popular for boys or girls—Doctor peaked in 1884 after being given to 12 boys—but it received a lot of attention after being banned in New Zealand.

Doctor

Blogger No Big Dill introduced the world to her son Drummer back in 2011, adding it to the baby name pool. Like similar stylish names Gardener and Parker, Drummer is an occupational name that works for boys and girls. If you prefer the guitar over drums, Strummer is a soundalike option.

Daring astronomical choice that's sure to shock Grandma and Grandpa.

Meteor

A mighty name that gets straight to the point. Power could fall under the category of modern virtue names, although it's stronger-willed than current favorites True, Zen, and Justice.

The range of occupational baby names is ever expanding, and Ranger is a recent addition to the list. It feels both natural—reminiscent of park rangers—and western and rugged, as in the Lone Ranger. If you're making a choice between Ranger and Danger, we suggest the less aggressive former. Plus, this one gives you the option of nicknames Rae, Rayne, and Rainey too, and ties to various sports teams and Dungeons and Dragons. Currently given to more than 100 boys in each recent year, it has yet to chart for girls, but this could change in the future.

Ranger

Creative alternative to names like Riley, Ryder, and Ryker, of which you'll find many in a Kindergarten classroom. As a poetry-related baby name, Rhymer feels more unexpected than Sonnet or Poet.

If there are too many rockstars to honor on your list, cut right to the chase with Rocker. It might raise a few eyebrows, but with names like Rocky, Parker, Palmer, Lyric, and Rebel being used, Rocker might not sound quite so out there as it might have once done.
As a word name, Rocker might refer to someone who makes, performs, sings, or generally enjoys rock music, though it could also imply someone who "rocks the boat" (or the status quo), making it an interesting sibling option for Rebels, Wilders, Ryatts, and Rowdys. There's also the complimentary slang phrase "you rock", associating Rocker with being talented, helpful, impressive, or admirable in some way. For those who like the sound and idea of the name but like something with a bit more history, Rocker is also a surname, originally given to someone who lived near large or prominent rocks, or who was a stone or rock worker.
Given to 34 boys in the US in a recent count, it's yet to catch on for girls but with celebs naming their daughters Rocki and Rocky, it's not impossible to imagine Rocker being used in the future.

Rocker

Noisy baby name heard less often than Storm or Rain, but we forecast that Thunder will get some more attention, especially as a middle name. Usain Bolt used it for one of his twin sons, born in 2021.

This architectural word name could be used for the child of someone in real estate, but it feels less spirited than some of the other word name inspired by nature or virtues.

Auöur (also written as Auður without the umlaut) is a traditional feminine Icelandic name with deep Norse roots. Derived from Old Norse 'auðr' meaning 'wealth,' 'prosperity,' or 'rich,' it was borne by several notable women in Norse sagas, most famously Auður djúpúðga (Aud the Deep-Minded), a powerful 9th-century settler in Iceland. The name embodies strength, independence, and prosperity in Nordic culture. While common in Iceland where traditional names remain prevalent, Auöur is extremely rare internationally. The pronunciation may challenge non-Icelandic speakers, as the 'ö' or 'ð' sounds don't exist in many languages. This name represents Icelandic heritage and carries the cultural value of female strength from the Viking age.

Auöur

Ragnheiöur is a feminine name with Norse origins, primarily found in Iceland. The name combines elements meaning 'counsel' or 'advice' (ragn) and 'brightness' or 'honor' (heiðr), creating a meaning along the lines of 'bright counsel' or 'radiant advisor.' The unusual character 'ö' (should actually be 'ð' - eth) is specific to Icelandic orthography. Ragnheiöur remains relatively common in Iceland while being exceedingly rare elsewhere. The name carries associations with Norse mythology and Viking heritage, evoking images of strong, wise women in ancient Scandinavian cultures. Its distinctive pronunciation and spelling might present challenges outside Iceland, but it offers a powerful connection to Nordic traditions and a striking, unusual choice for those with Icelandic heritage.

Matthildur is a feminine Icelandic name derived from the Germanic name Matilda or Mathilde, combining elements meaning 'strength' and 'battle.' This distinctly Nordic variation maintains the powerful essence of its root name while adapting to Icelandic naming conventions. Matthildur remains primarily used in Iceland and by those with Icelandic heritage, rarely appearing outside this cultural context. The name carries historic weight, reflecting the traditional naming patterns of Norse cultures. With its strong consonants and distinctive ending, Matthildur offers a bold yet feminine choice. Parents selecting this name often have connections to Icelandic culture or are drawn to its unique sound and strong etymological meaning.

Matthildur

A medieval French name which belonged to the mother of Eleanor of Aquitaine (incidentally, Aenor is thought to be an older form of the name Eleanor). Its etymology is uncertain, but it may derive from the Germanic name Audamar, meaning "famous wealth'.
