4 Letter Girl Names

A word name that is, well, posh. It debuted in the US charts in 2022, perhaps owing to the anniversary editions of several Spice Girl albums in the 2020s, reminding fans of Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham). It has not reappeared in the charts since its debut, however.

Aiša is a feminine name with Islamic origins, representing a variant spelling of Aisha (or Ayesha). The name comes from Arabic and means 'alive' or 'she who lives.' It carries significant cultural importance as it was the name of the Prophet Muhammad's youngest and beloved wife, who became an important religious scholar and narrator of hadith in early Islamic history. The name is widely used throughout Muslim communities worldwide, with various spelling variations depending on regional transliteration practices. Aiša is particularly common in the Balkans, especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where this specific spelling is preferred. The name combines spiritual significance with a beautiful meaning, making it a popular choice for Muslim families seeking a name with both religious heritage and a positive connotation.

Aiša

A lovely meaning, but a crude soundalike word has stopped it from being widely used.

Gianna and Gia are both red-hot in recent years, so it is only natural that alternative spellings will begin popping up as well. This leads us to Ghia — still short and sweet, but may cause some more confusion.

Nađa is a feminine name of Slavic origin, particularly common in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other South Slavic countries. The name is closely related to Nadja and Nadia, all deriving from the Slavic word 'nadezhda' meaning 'hope.' The distinctive 'đ' character (pronounced like a soft 'j' or 'dj') is specific to South Slavic alphabets and gives the name its authentic regional character. Nađa has maintained steady popularity throughout the Balkans, appreciated for its simplicity, meaningful etymology, and cultural significance. Outside its regions of origin, the name may be simplified to Nadja or Nadia for pronunciation ease. The name carries connotations of optimism and expectation, resonating with its literal meaning of hope.

Unique and unusual as a nickname and a stand-alone name, Loie is a vintage choice worth reviving. It is traditionally used as a short form of Lois and Louise but would work as a nickname for any Lo- starting name, or even names such as Laura, Eloise, and Charlotte.

The best-known bearer of this name was Loie Fuller, a trailblazer in modern dance and stage lighting. She was an American, born in the Chicago suburbs, and christened Mary Louise Fuller. Fuller's original stage name was Louie, but she changed it to Loïe upon moving to Paris. In French, l'ouïe refers to a sense of hearing, and Loïe was a pun on that, also connected to the Medieval French word l'oïe, meaning "understanding."

Inès is a feminine name of Greek origin, representing a variation of Agnes. The name ultimately derives from the Greek word 'hagnos,' meaning 'pure' or 'holy.' This particular spelling with the accent mark is most common in French and Spanish-speaking countries, giving it an elegant, continental flair. Inès gained international recognition through notable bearers like French actress Inès de la Fressange. The name offers a sophisticated alternative to Agnes or Inez while maintaining the same historical roots. In France, it has enjoyed steady popularity for decades, appreciated for its simple elegance and classic feel. Inès combines brevity with a touch of exotic charm, making it appealing to parents seeking a name that works internationally.

This sweet double-L name is used as a diminutive form of "Lu" names, particularly in Latin American, where actresses Luli Miller (Lucielle), Luli Salazar (Luciana), and Luli Torn (Carla Lucia) have made it more familiar. It could work globally however, as a short form of Luisa, Lulit, or Lucy, or as a stand alone, given the popularity of Lumi and Leni.

A truly multicultural option, Luli also has its origins in Chinese, where it is made up of the elements Lu "dew, essence" and li "white jasmine", lending it bright floral appeal. It coincides with lule too, the Albanian word for "flower".

Another appealing meaning comes from the Aymara language, spoken by the indigenous Aymara people of Bolivia and Peru. In this case, it means "hummingbird".
