Ylvi is a feminine Scandinavian name with Norse origins, considered a variant of Ylva, which derives from the Old Norse word "úlfr" meaning "wolf." In Nordic countries, particularly Sweden, Norway, and Iceland, this name carries connotations of strength, independence, and connection to nature. The wolf symbolism evokes qualities of loyalty, family protection, and natural wisdom. Ylvi features the distinctive Nordic preference for the letter Y and maintains a concise, melodic quality typical of Scandinavian naming patterns. While uncommon even in its countries of origin, Ylvi has gained modest attention internationally as interest in Nordic culture and minimalist yet meaningful names has increased. Its rarity offers uniqueness while its heritage provides cultural depth.

Enni is a concise, feminine name with Finnish origins, though it appears in various cultures with different etymologies. In Finland, it often functions as a diminutive of names containing the element "en" or may stand independently. The name has gained moderate popularity in Finland during recent decades. In Japanese, written with different characters, Enni can have meanings related to blessing, connection, or circle. The name's brevity and pleasant sound make it accessible across language barriers. With just two syllables and an appealing flow, Enni has a contemporary feel while maintaining a certain softness appropriate for a feminine name. Its international versatility and modern simplicity appeal to parents seeking a name that is both distinctive and easy to pronounce.

Ylva may look like it belongs with the Eva family of names, but it actually derives from Ulf, a name meaning "wolf." It's not a very intuitive name to English-speakers, and likely won't get picked up in the US anytime soon. At last count, it was only given to five American baby girls.

Erva is a feminine name with multiple cultural origins. In Turkish, it means 'honey' or 'sweet,' while in Finnish contexts it's associated with liveliness and energy. The name also appears in Portuguese-speaking regions with varied meanings. This short, distinctive name has a gentle sound with its soft consonants and open ending. Erva remains relatively uncommon in English-speaking countries, making it an distinctive choice for parents seeking something simple yet unique. The name's brevity makes it easy to pronounce across languages, though its spelling might occasionally be confused with Erza or Eva. Despite its rarity, Erva has a timeless quality that works well in contemporary naming trends that favor short, vowel-rich names for girls.

One of several fascinating names used in Charlaine Harris's Midnight, Texas books and the NBC adaptation thereof, Fiji is a pleasingly quirky place name that's been little used for babies. Though it has been used quite a lot for fancy bottled water, we don't think it quite qualifies as a water name.

Jaxx (and Jax, Jaxson, Jaxsen, Jaxton et all) is now on the Top 1000 for boys, and while we don't foresee this becoming anywhere near as popular for girls, it was also found on the female side of the ledger. Jaxxie, anyone?

Yet another member of the Gwyn/Gwen/Finn family of names ultimately deriving from a Celtic element meaning "white", Guin gets rare use in England and Wales; a notable bearer is Olympic-medal winning rower Guin Batten. Guin could also be a nickname or shorter, sharper form of the elaborate Guinevere. There’s also a literary connection, thanks to the hugely influential American fantasy novelist Ursula K. Le Guin.

Aeta is a punchy botanical name which grabs attention without being overly long or frilly. British suffragette Aeta Lamb was a close collaborator of the now more famous Emmeline Pankhurst. Aeta was named by her father after a species of palm found in British Guiana, where she was born. Aeta went to prison several times for her efforts to win British women voting and other legal rights.

Aoua is a Malian variation of Eve - the original woman’s name - which is fitting for a name so closely connected to Mali's first female parliamentarian. Aoua Keita’s father insisted on giving her the best education he could - which was unusual anywhere in the early 20th century, but particularly so in Mali. As a midwife, Aoua devoted herself to delivering women the best pre- and post-natal care she could offer, but her feminist credentials skyrocketed after she entered politics. In 1960 she became the only woman elected to Mali’s new National Assembly and was the only woman within the party leadership. Along with such an impressive namesake, Aoua is one of those unique baby names that consists of only vowels.

While in Armenia, Italy and Nigeria Saro is regarded as a masculine name, in English Saro is a rare feminine name, familiar because of the old English folk song Pretty Saro, which was rediscovered in the 20th century, having been preserved through Appalachian oral tradition. In the song, Saro is a girl whom the singer has had to leave behind in his home country after emigrating, which might give an indication as to how it came to be found in North America. Saro in this case is generally thought to be a diminutive of Sarah.

Like the variation Wenna, Wenn is an early Cornish form of Gwen. Confusion with the English word "when" leads us to suggest that the longer form Wenna would be more "name-like".
