Irish Names that Start With C

A jazzy Irish surname, most notably borne by the great sax player John Coltrane, this name has been used for boys since the 90s and fits in to the recent trend for last names as first names. Now, with Murphy, McKay, McCoy, and Campbell in use for girls, Coltrane has intrigued some contemporary parents for their daughters.
From it's Irish roots, it means "descendant of Coltarán", though it has its origins in Old English too, likely given to someone from a place where coal or charcoal was mined.

Nickname Colt is a possibility, along with Coco, Rae, and Connie.

Croí's big sister name Croía has become popular in Ireland, but this simpler version is rare and arguably cooler.

Croí

A modern Irish word name, Críonna is associated with wisdom, prudence, good judgement, and old age. Pronounced as either KREE-nuh or KREE-uh-nuh, depending on region and dialect, it has a similar sound and style to more familiar Irish choices, like Clíodhna / Clíona, Caitríona, and Croía.

Historically, it has been used for boys too, and does appear in some versions of Irish legend, borne by the brother of the legendary high king, Art mac Cuinn.

Críonna

Quietly used for girls these days, Críonna has historically been for boys and appeared in some variations of Irish legend, borne by the brother of the high king, Art mac Cuinn. Derived from an Irish word of the same spelling, Críonna can mean "wise, prudent, sagacious, and old, elderly".

The name may be pronounced as KREE-nuh or KREE-uh-nuh, depending on region and dialect.

Coilin is a masculine name of Irish Gaelic origin. It is a diminutive form of 'Coil' or 'Coll,' meaning 'hazel tree,' which was significant in Celtic culture as a symbol of wisdom and inspiration. The suffix '-in' adds an endearing quality, suggesting 'little Coil.' While not widely used internationally, Coilin maintains popularity primarily within Ireland and among families with Irish heritage. The name carries a traditional Celtic charm while being distinctive and uncommon. Its pronunciation (KOY-leen or KOH-leen) sometimes causes it to be confused with the more common 'Colin,' though they have different etymological roots.

Coilin

Similar in style to Clíona, Caitríona, and Croía, Crionna is a modern Irish word name, taken from críonna, in turn associating it with wisdom, good judgement, and old age. It can be pronounced as KREE-nuh or KREE-uh-nuh, depending on region and dialect.

The Irish boys' name Colum, rarely heard in the U. S., makes an interesting alternative to Colin.

Colum

The great sax player John Coltrane could be a cool naming inspiration for a jazz fan. Plus, it gives you stylish nickname Colt, if you didn't love Colton or Colter.

From it's Irish roots, it means "descendant of Coltarán", though other sources suggest it has its origins in Old English too, likely given to someone from a place where coal or charcoal was mined.

Despite pronunciation, looks a bit like an airline or -- worse still -- a hair dryer name.
