Three Syllable Names for Boys

With its zippy Z initial and its similarity to the popular Amari, Kamari, and Zamir, this modern invention has more than doubled in popularity in the last decade. Given to 111 boys and to 40 girls in 2024, it is particularly popular among the the African American community.

Zamari has a number of possible Arabic origins, including: a twist of Amari, itself a twist on Ammar, meaning "one who builds"; a spin of Jamar or Jamari, from Jamal, meaning "beauty"; an alternative for Zamir meaning "mind and heart", or from Samar, meaning "evening conversation". Other possibilities include the musical Hebrew name Zamar or that it is simply a modern creation.

A minor prophet who has his own Book, Zephaniah is another Old Testament gem waiting to be rediscovered now that Noah and Abraham are becoming too trendy.

The vowel-sound ending of Zephaniah is currently bang on trend, along with other Biblical boys' names with softer sounds – think Elijah, Asher and Isaiah. Zephaniah would make a perfect lesser-used alternative to Zachariah.

A famous namesake is the British writer and dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah.

Leander was once an almost unknown name, however, with the popularity of Leo and the rise of Leandro, it now feels like a perfectly accessible alternative to Leon or Alexander. In Greek legend, Leander was the powerful figure who swam across the Hellespont every night to visit his beloved Hero, a priestess of Venus.
Combining the Latin words Leo and Andros, this name has a cool, animal-related meaning, that lends it strength and bravery. A once familiar name in the US, it fell out of favor back in the 40s, though in the last decade, it has nearly doubled in use with almost 120 babies receiving the name in 2023.

While Leander is in the Norwegian Top 100 and the Nameberry Top 200, elsewhere, the Spanish variant Leandro or the French Leandre tend to be favored.

Calloway is one of those irresistibly jaunty, animated three-syllable surnames, like Sullivan, Rafferty and Finnegan — but this one has the added attraction of jazzy ties to the immortal "Dean of American Jive," Cab Calloway. With its melodic sound, its similarity to Callahan, Caleb, Waylon, and Callum, and its fun, nature meaning, Calloway is a quietly rising choice in the US, given to 87 boys (and 22 girls) in a recent year.

Unisex option Dominique peaked for boys at Number 170 in 1991, perhaps due to the popularity of basketball player Dominique Wilkins. While it has now fallen out of the popularity charts in both the US and its native France, it was still given to around 140 boys and 60 girls in a recent year. This makes it a truly gender-neutral baby name, joining the ranks with - yet standing out from - the likes of Charlie, Rowan, Parker, and Sevyn.

Ishmael is most familiar through "Call me Ishmael," the opening line spoken by the youthful narrator of Moby-Dick. Few American parents have followed that advice, though the Spanish and Arabic spelling, Ismael, ranks at Number 362. With its warm and pleasant sound, though, we could see Ishmael tagging along behind Isaiah and Isaac.
In the Bible, Ishmael was Abraham's first son by the Egyptian maidservant Hagar, who was told by God to name him Ishmael. In Islamic tradition, Ishmael (or Ismail) is believed to have been the ancestor of the Arabs.
Ishmael Bush is one of the main characters in James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Prairie, and there is an Ismael in the Lemony Snicket book, The End. Some notable real-life bearers are novelist and poet Ishmael Reed and Indian-born film producer Ismail Merchant.

Kamarion is a modern masculine name that has gained recognition in the United States since the early 2000s. It appears to be a creative extension of names like Kamari or Kameron, possibly combining elements of these names with the popular '-ion' suffix found in names like Demarion and Jamarion. The prefix 'Kamar' may have Arabic roots meaning 'moon.' Kamarion exemplifies the trend toward creating distinctive, melodious names with a contemporary feel. The name has a rhythmic quality and strong sound that many parents find appealing. While not among the most common names, Kamarion has been steadily chosen by parents seeking something unique yet accessible. It fits well with current naming trends that favor longer names with multiple syllables and memorable endings.

Finnian is a fair jig of a name, energetic and easy on the ear. Finnian (and brother Finian) is also familiar in its alternate spelling through the classic 1968 Broadway musical Finian's Rainbow, later made into a film starring Fred Astaire as Finian McLonergan.
There is also a St. Finnian who was a famous teacher and scholar.
We think Finnian/Finian could really catch on in the wake of cousins Finn and Finlay/Finley.
