A traditional name still used in Orthodox families. Rivka is the original form of Rebekah or Rebecca, today used far more widely than the original. Rifka is a variation.

Rivka

Boyish nickname name that first heard in the Ricki/Terri era but finding new favor among parents who love names like Billie and Frankie, Scottie and Stevie. Sister spelling Andie has also been on the rise in recent years, and when you combine the two, around 700 girls received the slightly retro moniker.

The various spellings of this name are commonly found in pop culture. Andi is the titular character in the Disney series, Andi Mack/. Andi Dorfman is a former Bachelorette lead. Spelled Andy, she is the main character of The Devil Wears Prada played by Anne Hathaway, while Molly Ringwald played Andie Walsh in Pretty in Pink.

Indie is an independent-sounding nickname name that is in the Top 100 in Wales. As a diminutive, it's growing in popularity -- along with indie films, indie publishing -- and the reason some parents are choosing names like India and Indigo. The Indie version seems more feminine, while Indy as in Indiana Jones tends toward the boyish.

When actress Tamera Mowry named her daughter Ariah, she said it was a Hebrew name meaning "lion of God" -- which it is, if you consider Ariah a variation of Ariel. But many sources consider Ariah a spelling variation of the Italian Aria, meaning song or literally air.

The Ariah spelling may cause some pronunciation confusion, especially if you want to pronounce the name AHR-ee-ah. But if you want to use the pronunciation rhyming with Mariah, this spelling will help clarify.

Oaklyn is one of the oak-related names moving up the popularity charts, along with more popular sister Oakley and near-identical twin Oaklynn. The Oaklynn spelling used for three times as many baby girls as Oaklyn -- 1800 vs. 600.

Aya, barely more than a breath, is an international favorite, with origins in several languages and cultures. Popular throughout Europe, it ranks in the US Top 1000 and was chosen for nearly 470 babies in a recent year.

As with many multicultural names, it has a variety of meanings. In Japanese, it is a colorful name, also associated with intricate design (pronounced A-YA). From its Hebrew origins, it can be considered a nature and bird name, related to the honey buzzard or to birds and flying more generally (pronounced a-YA).

Aya is also a Danish name (a respelling of Aja or Aija) possibly meaning "rock, lull" from Latvian Aija or "happiness" from Finnish Eija, and is a highly popular choice there. In this case, it would be said as IE-yah. In Arabic meanwhile, Aya means "sign, evidence" or "verse" and is a popular name in the Muslim community, also spelled as Ayah and said A-ya.

That only scratches the surface, however, because Aya also appears in Semitic mythology, where it means "dawn"; as a Kazakh name meaning "hideout, shelter" (said ah-YAH); in the Cherokee language meaning "I, me"; and as an alternative form of the Basque place name, Aya.

Thought we were done? No, because Aya may also be linked to the Turkic element ay meaning "moon", and therefore to Turkish-Altaic mythology in which the angelic Ayas symbolized creativity, abundance, and goodness. IE-a would be the pronunciation here.

In Mongolian, it means "melody", while in in Baoulé on the Ivory Coast, it is given to girls born on Fridays.

An Ancient Egyptian Queen, a Belgian Catholic Saint, and an Akkadian goddess, Aya has a lot of history and meaning hidden behind those three letters. More contemporary associations include Aya Korem, an Israeli singer-songwriter, and Aya Liu, a Taiwanese actress. And actress Hilary Swank named her daughter Aya (twin to brother Ohm) in 2024.

Zariyah has several possible origins: the Arabic Zahrah which means "flower" or Zariya "scattering wind"; the Hebrew name Azariah, meaning "God has helped"; or the Russian word Zaria which means "sunrise, dawn."

Thalia was one of the Three Graces in Greek mythology, and also the Muse of comedy and pastoral poetry, making this a Hellenic choice worthy of consideration.
In the Rick Riordan series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Thalia Grace is the demigod daughter of Zeus. Thalia was also a character on Everwood.
The single-named Mexican singer Thalia was born Ariadne Thalia Sodi Miranda.
Thalia had a one-off appearance on the list in 1932 and then reentered the US Top 1000 in 1992, reaching its height of Number 363 in 1993.

Boyish nicknames for girls are all the rage — just look at the success of Charlie, Frankie, Stevie, Billie, and Scottie in recent years. Andie has history as a nickname for Andrea, popularized by actress Andie Macdowell. This name has major cool girl appeal through Kate Hudson's portrayal of Andie Anderson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Molly Ringwald's of Andie Walsh in Pretty in Pink. Spelled Andi, this name entered the US Top 1000 in 2015, and now the (arguably more substantial) Andie spelling has joined the charts. Combining the two spellings, this name was given to around 700 baby girls.

Serene Irene, the name of the Greek goddess of peace and one of the most familiar Greek goddess names, was hugely popular in ancient Rome and again in the United States a hundred years ago.
One of the most popular names of the Roman Empire and the name of several early saints, this originally Greek name (then spelled Eirene) represented a daughter of Zeus who was the goddess of peace. Often pronounced with three syllables, it spread throughout Europe in a range of variations and is a royal name in Greece, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Much of Irene's popularity in England stemmed from the character Irene Forsyte in Galsworthy's The Forsyte Saga (pronounced eye-reen-ee). Americans identified it with the sparkling Irene Dunne of Hollywood's Golden Age. Irene was a Top 20 name from 1915 to 1925, remaining in the Top 100 until 1945. It still highly popular in Spain.
Some other references include the eponymous early smash hit Broadway musical, famed ballroom dancer Irene Castle (portrayed on film by Ginger Rogers), the Hollywood costume designer known simply as Irene, the Uma Thurman character in Gattaca, Irene Denholm the Harry Potter student at Hogwarts School, and the lullaby-ready song Goodnight, Irene.

As sweet-smelling as Rose but with an international flavour, Rosa is one of the most classic Portuguese, Spanish and Italian names, which is also favored by upper-class Brits, having an ample measure of vintage charm. Rosa has been on the popularity charts for every year that's been counted, especially popular from the 1880s through the beginning of the twentieth century.
The name of a thirteenth century saint, Rosa has several other notable namesakes. In literature, she was a character in David Copperfield. Rosa Parks is a Civil Rights icon, Rosa (born Marie-Rosalie) Bonheur was a noted nineteenth century French artist, Rosa Ponselle an American operatic soprano and Rosa Luxemburg a left-wing activist. In the modern world there have been several Rosas in video games, including Final Fantasy IV.

The Gaelic Eileen was a mid-century darling that was on a long downward slide for decades. And then, in 2012, it took an unexpected pivot and has been inching upward in the US, perhaps inspired by similar sounding choices like Isla and Iris, along with retro choices like Valerie, Marjorie, and Dorothy.

Eileen is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic Eibhlin or Aibhilin, which is technically a form of to Evelyn/Aveline, but is also sometimes considered part of the Helen family of names.

Currently in the US Top 700, it's one of those familiar yet underused choices that feels as surprising as it does down to earth.

Gloria is beginning to move beyond its de-glamorized Grandma image, most recently thanks to glamorous young Hollywood parents Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, who chose it for their second daughter. Gyllenhaal was quoted as saying they had been inspired by Patti Smith's rendition of the Van Morrison song "Gloria" at a concert and thought " 'We'll name our daughter that one day'."
George Bernard Shaw was one of the first to use this form of the ancient Latin name GLORIANA in his 1898 play You Never Can Tell It was a Top 25 name in the Gloria (born Josephine) Swanson era of the 1920s,--reaching as high as Number 20 in 1925-26) and held on in the Top 50 until 1955.

Spelled this way, Briana was coined by Edmund Spenser for his great literary work, The Faerie Queene, which gives the now-overexposed name a far classier pedigree than it's usually credited with.

Brianna is currently the most popular feminine form of Brian in the US, given to three times as many baby girls as Briana. Depending on your viewpoint, that may be a vote either for or against the more unique Briana spelling, though whichever version you choose is sure to prompt confusion over spelling and pronunciation.

One enduring appeal of Briana and sisters is that they're girl names that mean strong, brave, or powerful, which may be why George R. R. Martin names his warrior maiden Brienne of Tarth.
