English Names

Now seen as the chap in the smoking jacket in a 1930s drawing-room comedy, Reginald has actually been on the US popularity list every year since 1880.
A name that was quite common throughout the MIddle Ages, in the modern era Reginald has been associated—in its nickname form—with star athletes like Reggie Jackson and Reggie Bush, plus it's the birth name of Elton John. In literature, Reginald Wilfer is a character in the Dickens novel Our Mutual Friend; Reginald is also the first name of capable and oh-so-proper butler Jeeves in P.G. Wodehouse's books, and, indeed, it still reflects his pompous image.

Most familiar as the name of Tony Soprano's wife, but she spelled it Carmela. In the contemporary US, both Carmella and Carmela are used in near-equal numbers, given to a total of about 300 baby girls last year.

These Latinate versions are used much more frequently in the US than Carmel.

Nelly or Nellie is an adorable nickname name that can be short for a wide range of more formal appellations or that can stand on its own, and is typical of the vintage nickname genre that is growing in popularity. While Nelly can be used for several different names, from Helen to Eleanor to Cornelia, it has stood on its own for more than a century. It was one of the most popular names – spelled as Nellie – in the U.S. at the end of the 1800s.
The musician known as DJ Fatboy Slim named his little girl Nelly.

When Harrison is too much, but Harry isn't enough, try this stylish surname name with a touch of British flair. It briefly reentered the US Top 1000 for the first time since 1988 in 2016, but has since dropped just below the radar again.

Harris is wildly popular in Scotland, where it is also a geographical name, belonging to one of the largest of the country's many islands. Harris consistently ranks in the Top 10 for boys in Scotland, and in the Top 300 in neighboring England and Wales.

Harris is also an extremely popular surname, among the Top 25 most common last names in the US.. A famous current bearer is Kamala Harris, who in 2021 became the first ever female vice president of the US, as well as the first African American and first Asian American vice president.

Now that parents have picked virtually every name in the garden, from the common Rose to the captivating Zinnia, some are reconsidering the old, more generic names like Flora and Posy and Blossom — which was last in favor in the 1920s and still has a Floradora showgirl aura.
The most well-remembered recent representative is the eponymous character in the early nineties sitcom Blossom. Blossom was also one of the Powderpuff Girls and appeared on Dawson's Creek.
A real-life namesake is jazz singer Blossom Dearie.

Knowledge is a word name that's surprising popular in the US, where a recent year saw it given to 184 boys. And if Maverick, Legend, and Justice can be popular baby names, why not Knowledge? It's an important quality for any child to possess, via their name as well as their brain, and you can have all kinds of knowledgeability, in the classroom or the great outdoors, emotionally or spiritually and beyond.

It may feel like a heavy name to wear, however, though nicknames Nol or Ned might help to ground it.

This spelling variation of unisex Casey leans farther to the girls' side. Kaycee ranked in the US Top 1000 in the late 80s and 90s, but has fallen out of favor now.

Though Genesis is a Top 100 girls' name in the US, it's by all rights a unisex choice.
Derived from Greek, it means "birth" or "origin", making it a word name and a Biblical name,
Genesis also shares sounds with other unisex and masculine options, such as Alexis, Otis, Reese, Silas, and Ellis. It is therefore given to a not insubstantial 200 boys each year.
Outside of US, where Genesis is far less popular and rarely heard, it could make a cool and untraditional option for those wanting to celebrate the Bible, those who like the rock band, or anyone hoping for a new beginning.

All the old ae/ay middle names for girls are back — Kay, Fay, Mae/May — and Rae is one of the coolest, used as such by celebrities as Mark Wahlberg and Daniel Baldwin.

Even more popular in the celebrisphere is the jazzy Ray spelling: among those who used it as their daughters' middles are Bruce Willis, Dermot Mulroney, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, Uma Thurman and Lee Lee Sobieski.
But Rae is perfectly capable of standing on her own, as in Rae Dawn Chong; it was in the Top 500 in the first two decades of the twentieth century.

Part Ashley, part Ainsley, part Annie, Ansley featured in the US Top 1000 from the late '90s until 2020. It peaked in 2011 when it nearly reached the Top 600, but has declined in recent years.

An English place name, its meaning could come from the Old English ansetleah, meaning "isolated hermitage in the woodland clearing", or from ãnstiga meaning "one path". While Ainsley is now the more popular form, Ansley is believed to have developed first.

Notable bearers include actress and writer Ansley Gordon, singer Ansley Burns, and social media influencer, Ansley Spinks.

Given to around 210 girls in a recent year, the name is less than half as popular than it was at its peak. It continues to prove a favorite in Georgia, however, possibly owing to the neighborhood of the same name in Atlanta.

The name of three hundred saints, a mustard, and your own baby boy. Coleman was off the US Top 1000 list for much of the 1960s and 1970s, but it was a mainstay before and has been for most years since. It could be an interesting way to honor a Colin or Cole.

Rue has gone from Golden Girls actress to Hunger Games heroine to a fresh alternative to beloved middle name Rose. This botanical name is also a coincidental double word name, meaning "regret" in English and "street" in French. Despite these unfortunate secondary meanings, Rue has real potential to be one of the most popular new middle names for girls.
It's use in the popular TV series Euphoria has certainly brought it into the spotlight. Since the character of Rue Bennett was portrayed by Zendaya in 2019, the name has been used four times more often than it once was in the US.
The herbal plant Rue was introduced by the Romans and has been prized for its medicinal properties – the ancients believed it guarded against epilepsy and vertigo and improved the sharpness of vision.

As a name, it has been used as a nickname for Ruth and Ruby, meaning it fits in with vintage nickname options like Bea, Nell, Mae, and Lou, while also matching the style of modern word names such as Wren, Sage, True, and Hart.
Actress Rue McClanahan, who played Blanche in The Golden Girls, was born Eddi-Rue, named for her parents' middle names Edwin and Rheua-Nell. Actress Sara Rue made her surname the middle name of daughter Talulah Rue.

In 2023, Rue was one of the fastest rising names in England and Wales, jumping into the Top 1000 for the first time. In the US, it has also been trending upwards and was given to around 180 girls in a recent year.

Dina is a 20th century version of either Dinah or Adinah, two Old Testament names not related to each other. Dinah was the beautiful daughter of Jacob and Leah, while Adinah or Adina was a male soldier, though the name is also used for girls in modern Israel.

A contraction name, Sidney comes from Saint Denis and is related to Dioynsius, the Greek god of fertility and wine, although another theory is that it derived from an Anglo-Saxon place name, meaning 'at the wide island.' Sidney is an aristocratic British surname--as in the Elizabethan poet George Sidney-- and later attained a further measure of distinction through its association with the self-sacrificing hero of Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities, Sidney Carton, and with Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier.
In the US, Sidney was most popular in the 19-teens, when it was in the Top 100 for that decade, but has gradually declined, especially after the girl's name Sydney burst into popularity in the 1990's.

Back in the late '70s, Farrah Fawcett's name was as frequently copied as her hairstyle and even made the Top 200 in 1977! Like any trend, however, it promptly fell back out of style, only to re-emerge in the 2010s, in honor of the star's death and possibly thanks to TV personality, Farrah Abraham of Teen Mom too.

This would give the impression that Farrah was simply a trendy choice, however, it is in fact an established Arabic name, also transcribed as Farah, meaning "happiness". This was not, however, where the actress's mother got the name from. Originally spelled as Ferrah (and used as her middle name), it was a made up choice, likely inspired by Tara, Cara, and similar, chosen because it sounded good with their surname.

Given to 209 girls in a recent year, Farrah has seen a small spike of renewed interest in the US.

Both Madisyn and Madison have lost ground in recent years.

In the US, London is popular for both sexes, though as the name has risen for girls, it's levelled off for boys. Currently given to around 200 boys each year, it is nearly five times more popular for girls, however, it been on decline across the board since its peak in 2013. Conjuring up images of Big Ben, red phone boxes, and the London Eye for some, but perhaps the rush hour commute and grey skies for others, London is far less popular in the UK and other English-speaking countries.

the exact etymology of London is unknown, however theories suggest it was named for King Lud who once controlled the city and therefore means "Lud's Fortress", Lud possibly coming from Llud meaning "mist, haze" or "to acquire". A more recent suggestion is that it comes from a proto-Indo-European root, lendh meaning "sink", which was adapted into the Celtic noun londos meaning "subduing". Combined with a Celtic suffix to make it singular, the old name Londinjon could then mean "place that floods", reflecting the tidal element of the River Thames. Several other linguists and historians have suggested a variety of origins, all which reference the river in some way.

Stylish, sweet, and bubbly, Livvy is a familiar short form of the popular Olivia, though it could easily work as a nickname to Olive, Lavinia, or Liv as well. In recent years, however, Livvy has been gaining attention as a standalone option, with 110 baby girls called "just" Livvy in the US in the latest stats.

Fitting right in with the likes of Lottie, Lily, and Libby, along with contemporary faves, Stevie, Jovie, and Navy, Livvy was also chosen by reality TV stars, Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Lauren Burnham for their daughter in 2025.
