German Names

Maverick meets Merritt in this strong sounding choice, which has its origins in Welsh, German, and Scottish. Notably borne by dancer Merrick Hanna, comedian and presenter Merrick Watts, and by Merrick Tremayne, the central character of Natasha Pulley's novel, The Bedlam Stacks, it was briefly bumped into the US Top 1000 in 2016 following The Supreme Court saga of Justice Merrick Garland.

From its Welsh origins, Merrick derives from Meurig, itself a variation of the Latin Maurice and Maurus, meaning "dark-skinned" or "Moorish". From its Scottish origins, it literally means "fingered, knuckled", but is usually interpreted as referring to a fork in a river or road, and thus it's been used as the name of several Scottish places. From its Germanic and English roots, it combines rih ("power, ruler") with mari ("famous, fame"), making it an all-round versatile choice.

Given to 165 boys in a recent year, along with 16 girls, it makes a familiar yet less popular alternative to Maverick,
Derek, and Eric.

In the language of flowers, Zinnias symbolize remembrance, affection, tribute, and friendship.

Willie

Considered ultra debonair in the silent-movie era, Gilbert then went through a nerdy phase, a la Gilbert Gottfried. Now though, like Albert and Alfred and Walter and Frank, it could be in for a style revival.
Gilbert has always been on the US popularity list, reaching as high as Number 90 in 1930. The Normans introduced Gilbert to England, where it was common during the Middle Ages; it was the name of a 12th century English saint.
Gilberts have appeared in such books as Henry James's Portrait of a Lady, Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, and Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, and on screen in The Incredibles and as embodied by the young Johnny Depp in What's Eating Gilbert Grape?. The most famous portrait painter of George Washington was Gilbert Stuart.
Nickname Gil could come back along with Hal, but even more appealing are Gib or Gibby.

The K may be trendy, but this spelling variation is much less popular than Marcus.

Bernard is obviously a saint's name, but how did it get to the big, benevolent dog? The eleventh century monk, patron saint of mountain climbers, who lived in the Alps, was famed for setting up safe houses for pilgrims on their way to Rome over the treacherous St. Bernard Pass, and the canine breed, also used to rescue people in treacherous conditions, was named for him.
Over the years, though, the name has taken on a highly intellectual image, losing most of that old Alpine energy. There were lots of little Bernies in the early decades of the twentieth century; Bernard reached as high as Number 45 in 1921.
And the name does have some cultural cred, via playwright (George) Bernard Shaw, seminal art historian Bernard Berenson, and novelist Bernard Malamud. And let's not forget that 2016 and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders's first name is Bernard as well.

Bernard

Amilia is a feminine name that represents a variant spelling of Amelia, which derives from the Germanic word 'amal' meaning 'work' or 'industrious.' This alternate spelling maintains the melodic quality of the original while offering a slightly different visual presentation. Amilia shares the rich history of Amelia, which has been used since medieval times and was popularized by figures like aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. The name has a gentle, flowing sound that contributes to its romantic appeal. While less common than the standard spelling, Amilia appeals to parents seeking a familiar name with a subtle twist to make it more distinctive.

Cultured and cultivated in an old-style, Old World way, Anton is popular across Europe. It may be associated with the classic Russian playwright Anton Chekhov and also with ballroom dancer Anton Du Beke.
A truly international form of Anthony, it was used by Al Pacino for his son.

Perhaps the ultimate nicknamey name, Ziggy manages to sound cool, cutesy, spiky, and energetic all at once. It brings to mind the glam-rock of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the cool vibes of reggae musician Ziggy Marley, along with the contemporary-but-vintage appeal of Teddy, Mack, and Albie.

Currently in the UK Top 400, Ziggy has also been moving up the US charts. Given to around 30 babies a decade ago, in 2022, it was given to nearly 170 baby boys and 40 baby girls. Deriving as a nickname for Siegfried, Sigmund, or similar, as a stand alone, it could mean "victory" from the Old Saxon element sigi.

While Ziggy works as a contemporary and zippy choice, if you love it but find it just a little too informal, it could work as a nickname for Zachary, Ezekiel, Zelig, Santiago, David (Ziggy Marley's official name) - or perhaps for any name containing a Z.

Ziggy

Brawny name chosen for his son by rocker Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue.

Wilhelmina might once have been condemned as a clunky relic best left in the past, but a steadily increasing number of parents are dusting it off for their 21st century babies. A reasonably popular choice in the 19th century, but out of favor by the 1950s, in the last decade, Wilhelmina has attracted more attention, and was given to around 110 babies in a recent year.

A Dutch and German feminization of William, via Wilhelm, Wilhelmina is historically associated with Queen Wilhelmina who reigned in the Netherlands for most of the early 20th century, becoming a heroic figure during the two World Wars. The name got an infusion of glamour via Wilhelmina Cooper, the Dutch-born model who established the Wilhelmina Model Agency in 1967 — though the stylish association did little to save the name from going out of fashion.

The mid-2000s marked a turning point for Wilhelmina when the dynamic Vanessa Williams character from Ugly Betty gave the name a new edge, and it got a further boost in 2012, when singer musician Taylor Hanson chose it for his daughter.

More recently, the growing popularity of subscription newsletter Dracula Daily might have given the name increased exposure via the character Wilhelmina 'Mina' Harker. Increased interest around the vampire novel might have helped people see the name in a new light — while equally lending it some witchy, Gothic vibes.

While Willa is currently the more popular feminine form of William, ranking in the US Top 500, Wilhelmina is a more daring possibility that comes with a plethora of nicknames to lighten it, including: Mina, Minna, Minnie, Minka, Billie, Willa, Winnie, and Win.

Wilhelmina

A name with plenty of grandeur, but a playful nickname, Wolfgang blends sophistication, wildness, and gothic imagery. While it may feel surprising in this century, it does have an allure for those who want a name associated with dark academia, Halloween, history, intellect, wolves, and art.

Derived from Old German elements meaning "wolf" and "way", it is associated with roaming wolves, though Chef Wolfgang Puck has helped soften the name in recent years. For music lovers, it may appeal thanks to its association with Mozart, while literature lovers may think of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

And with Wolf on the rise in recent years, parents looking for something bolder and historical have turned to Wolfgang, with 115 boys given the name in a recent year. Over on social media, it has been selected by several creators including tattoo artist Noelin Wheeler, which could inspire other parents to use it in years to come.

Nicknames Wolf and Wolfie might help make the name more approachable.

Wolfgang

A streamlined spelling of Sophie, popular in several European nations, including Norway, Czechia, Denmark, and The Netherlands. While English speakers may say this as SO-fee, it may also be said as zo-FEE in German, so-FEE-uh in Danish and Norwegian and SO-fih-yeh in Czech.

The dynamic personality and paintings of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo have inspired growing numbers of parents to resurrect this form of the name. It does much better in certain European countries, especially in Denmark and Norway. The Frieda and Freida spellings were more popular in the US until the middle of the 20th century.
