Father’s Day Names: Dads of the rich and famous
It’s Father’s Day, and once more this year we commemorate the holiday with a list of some notable names of the paternal parents of celebrities of various times and places, with some truly unusual examples, as in Archulus (Truman Capote) and Belmont (Humphrey Bogart). It turns out that quite a  number of past (and a few present) notables have had Dads with interesting, and sometimes surprising, names. Here are some Father’s Day names to prove the point:
Alfred (called Freddie) – John Lennon

My Dad’s name is Kevin, on his birth certificate, but for some reason he’s always respelled it Keven. I feel a little bad that it doesn’t fit my naming-style, so we haven’t used it as a middle name for either of our boys. Maybe when my kids have kids, it will sound cooler!
Roseate Says:
My beloved Daddy is Bernard John, his father was Bernard George, and his father was Bernard Patrick.
On my mom’s side, my grandfather was Joseph Aloysius, his father was Joseph Ignatius, and his father was Joseph… not sure of the middle, but I bet it was awesome!
aimvonb Says:
@Roseate, my maternal grandfather’s name was Joseph Aloysius too
Lola Says:
My Grandfathers were Andrej & Leslie!
But there are still a lot more up there I adore: Cassius, Clarence, Francis, Isidore, Leo!, Winton.
Others I like but won’t use (at least not up front!): Clyde, Cornelius, Ernest, Gerrit, Homer, Kenneth!, Niccolo, Sylvio & Wilhelm.
I’d love to honor my Pop, but what can you do with Wayne? Augh!
Coxartgirl Says:
My Dad’s name is Homer Silas, my sister used Silas for her son’s middle name – Benjamin Silas.
GabbyRM Says:
My dad’s name is Reuel– a not so common Old Testament name and I believe the other name for Jethro, the priest of Medina (Moses’ father in law). My paternal grandfather was Elito, and Eli for short. Can’t think of my maternal grandfather’s name because he passed away before I was born.
tavn Says:
My dad’s name is Raynard Lynn, but goes by Ray.
My paternal grandfather’s name is Maxie Lee James, but goes by James or Jim.
My maternal grandfather’s name is Robert Winston, but goes by Bob. He used to be called Bobby Win when he was younger.
Ray has already been used on my cousin and my sister (Rae). I’d consider using James or Winston as middle names, but nothing else, really.
Olivia Says:
My dad is a Colin. Not overly interesting, and no middle name. I do plan on using the original Nicholas as a middle name though. My grandfather’s are Brian Lawrence and Alec Nickle ‘Nick’. Alec has been on the top of my list since I was about 11 and I know that it will certainly be the name of my son.
The only great grandfather I can remember the name of (or even met, for that matter) was Patrick Richard… although I think another was a Lawrence, but I’m not certain on the middle name.
Anyway, family history aside – great blog! Oh, and you’d have to have a name as cool as Sylvio to pull off Madonna!
Leslie Owen Says:
My father’s name was Wadsworth, a family name that goes back to Longfellow. Other grandfathers and great-grandfathers are:
George Wadsworth, George Cushman; Philip Melanchthon, Charles Edward, and Daniel Louis Immanuel Augustus — my father’s family
Thomas Irving, George Thomas, Georg Wilhelm, and Kristian-Sebastian Stefanus — my mother’s family
My nephew has George and my son has Thomas.
reedster Says:
my grandfather was named H.P. ….just initials, no names to go with them!
TRose Says:
My grandfather’s were Joseph Francis and Anton George. All four names have been several times by other family members, so I’ll probably not use them. My dad and brother’s name is Edmund and I would definitely use that in a middle position.
stephanie_elizabeth Says:
Father-Paul Douglas
Grandfathers-Paul Lee (maternal), Lawrence Douglas (paternal)
Great-Grandfathers-Chester Barkley (Barty) & Edward (maternal), Adam (paternal)
I plan on using Paul and Chester as middles, and Edward a first.
Victoria Says:
my father- Andrew
my grandfathers- Raoul & Douglas
my great grandfatherse- Jules, John, Ralph & Wilfred(Wilf)
Nyx Says:
I have a great-great-somebody (grandfather? uncle?) in my family named Wheeler… a name that my mom loves and would love to see passed on to one of her grandson’s, great-grandson’s, or even a nephew!

Alfred and Ernest are two of DH and I’s grandfathers; I would love to use these, probably in the middle. Ideally we could name twin boys John Ernest and George Alfred after our 4 grandfathers.
I already have a Peter (named for his father and grandfather).
