unisex

names are not inherently gendered, but here are some names that have unisex qualities, many beyond typical surname or occupational names.

Bix is a cool and jazzy nickname name, thanks to that final x. It's largely associated with the legendary and influential cornet player (and inspiration for the novel Young Man With a Horn), Bix Beiderbecke. He was born Leon Bismark Beiderbecke and his nickname derived from his middle name.
Bix could easily fit in with cousins Jax, Dax, etc.

Dee is a slight midcentury nickname that might be short for Deanna or Denise, but might be too slight for today's strong, independent female.

So simple, yet so unique: a prime candidate for export. Pronunciation is like the English pair or pear.

A traditionally masculine surname, denoting the head of a monastery, a priest, or someone who worked for a church official, Abbott may appeal as a fresh spin on Biblical Abigail. Quietly used for boys, it has seen very occasional use for girls since the 2000s.

Ultimately derived from the same root as Abraham, Abner, and the aforementioned Abigail, Abbott can mean "father", though it has been adapted to mean "priest" or "head of an abbey", via the Italian abate. As an English name, however, it's an occupational choice, given to someone who worked for a church official.

An unexpected honor for an Abigail or Abraham, perhaps, or even for a family member who works for the church, Abbott is a rarely used option with familiar nicknames.

Gardener is surely one of the most pleasant and evocative of the occupational options, calling up images of green grass and budding blooms. The name can also be spelled without the first 'e', as in Gardner (born George Cadogan Gardner) McCay, a hunky TV heartthrob of the 1950s and 60s. Gardner is a much more common surname spelling, associated with screen legend Ava, mystery writer Erle Stanley and art collector and patron Isabella Stewart, founder of Boston's Gardner Museum.
