Uncommon, but Non-Imaginary Names

Here's a list of names that I like that may not be super popular, but they also aren't so "out-there" that it seems like they were totally made up. For the most part, they will be either outdated or seldom-used, but still with some history behind them.

Forget the furry blue Muppet, forget corpulent President Cleveland (not too difficult), and consider this name anew. We think it's spunky, a little funky, and well worth a second look, similar in style to the likes of Wilder and Ranger, to Sullivan, Chester, and Stanley.
President (Stephen) Grover Cleveland was considered well-liked and respectable in his time, notable for his integrity and fight against political corruption. As such, many children were named after him, popularizing the name and pushing it to Number 20 in the 1880s, around the time of his presidency. Today, however, some may recall his passing and enthusiastic support of the Dawes Act which was so devastating to Native Americans.

Another well known Grover is jazz saxophonist Grover Washington Jr.

A recent year saw Grover used for 26 boys in the US.

Grover

Urban was not an uncommon name through the 1930s (rising as high as Number 435), having been attached to several saints and early popes, but it has completely disappeared from the landscape--both urban and rural. Yet in this era of word name appreciation and trend for 'an'-ending boys' names, we're thinking it might be ready for a return.
In the New Testament, Urban is an active member of the Christian church in Rome.
Urbano is the commonly heard Italian version, and the French Urbain was used by Henry James for an--yes--urbane character in The American.
These days, the name is associated with musician Keith Urban.

Urban

A name with several distinguished namesakes: the wife of ancient Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, a famous Italian opera singer, and two Catholic saints--making it both substantial and unusual.
