Calendula is a species of English marigold, deriving from the plural of Latin calends "the first of the month", because it blooms for most of the year. It would be a romantic and extravagant name for a daughter.

Identified with a region famous for its gold, more commonly spelled Ophira.

More intriguing than the more familiar form Nerida, this name is perfect for a beach baby, or a baby born under a water sign.

The delicate and haunting Welsh Rhonwen is still a rarity in the U.S., where her English version Rowena is better known, but would be a lovely choice for any parent in search of a name that was both unusual and traditional, classically feminine yet strong.
Though Irish names have long been popular in America, Welsh names are just beginning to be noticed and we see them as a wave of the future. In medieval Welsh poetry, Rhonwen is called "the Mother of the English Nation," and Rhonwen Baganes was a heroine of Welsh folklore. A soft and gentle name, Rhonwen's meaning -- slender and fair -- evokes the image of a lovely, light-haired girl. Other appealing 'wen' choices include Aelwen, Arianwen, Branwen, Bronwen. Gwendolen, Olwen and Tanwen. Just don't be tempted to change the 'wen' to 'wyn', which would transform it into a male name.

If January, April and August are useable and fashionable, why not February? February as a word derives from the Latin februa, which was the name of a purification feast coming at the end of winter, to prepare for the coming spring.

For our part, we like February along with December and January as names for winter babies; we also like the possibility of Airy and Rue as nicknames.

A possible stumbling block, however, is that clumsy "bruary" sound in the middle that no one ever quite gets right.

February

Laverna was the Roman goddess of thievery, cheating, and the underworld. The original meaning of her name in unknown, however, there are several theories. One such theory states that Laverna is related to the Latin word for theif, laterniō, while another connects the name to levare, meaning "to lift," as in shoplifting. In the case of the latter, Laverna would mean "goddess of gain".

Hyacinthe is a feminine name with Greek origins, derived from the name of the purple-blue flower called hyacinth. In Greek mythology, Hyacinthus was a beautiful youth beloved by Apollo. The feminine form Hyacinthe has been more common in French-speaking regions than in English-speaking countries. It carries an air of classical elegance and floral beauty. Though never widely popular in the United States or United Kingdom, the name has maintained a steady presence in France and among families with French heritage. Parents might choose this name for its beautiful sound, classical references, floral connection, and distinctly feminine yet sophisticated quality.

Hyacinthe

A widely used name in medieval Europe that's been almost completely forgotten. Blanche still reads as old lady-ish, and the frilly "-fleur" doesn't make it feel younger. But it could be a striking, not to say iconic, choice for a bold parent, especially if they had some sort of connection to white flowers or the Middle Ages.

Blanchefleur

Cesaria, a modern feminine form of Caesar or the Latinate Cesar, has been obscure in the Western World but may stir to life along with other names that have their roots in ancient Rome. Cesarina, Cesarie, and Cesarea are other options.

Cesaria

Rarely heard outside of Wales, Arianwen combines the pretty Welsh element gwen with the silvery arian, giving it a metallic and shining meaning. The name is sometimes listed as one of the daughters of the legendary fifth-century king and saint, Brychan Brycheiniog.

Given to 13 girls in England and Wales in a recent year, it is notably borne by actress Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood. In Welsh, it is typically pronounced a-ri-YAN-wehn, though in English, a-ree-AN-wehn may be heard.

Arianwen

An interesting and unusual member of the "Nic" family--far more distinctive than NICOLE or NICOLA.

Musette is a delicate feminine name of French origin with musical associations. Derived from the French word for a small bagpipe-like instrument popular in the 18th century, it also refers to a charming rustic dance. The name gained some recognition through its appearance in the opera 'La Bohème,' where Musetta is a spirited character. Though uncommon in mainstream usage, Musette carries a whimsical, artistic quality that appeals to parents drawn to French-inspired names with cultural depth. Its musical roots make it especially appealing to families with artistic inclinations. Despite its rarity, Musette offers a memorable, melodic quality while maintaining an elegant French sophistication that sets it apart from more commonly used French names.
