As Huxley and Huck become more popular and accepted, so does Hux, either as a full name or a diminutive.

Vale is part place name, part nature name -- a poetic term for a type of valley. Today Show coanchor Savannah Guthrie put Vale on the baby name map when she chose it for her daughter, but there's no reason the name can't work equally well for a boy.

Vale might also be a short form for Valentine or a spelling variation of the city name Vail.

Ray was used for 26 baby girls last year in the US - compared to over 300 boys. The Rae spelling is flipped, with almost 200 girls and a handful of boys. Ray is better appreciated as a sleek and simple middle name option - think Miley Ray Cyrus.

Portia is a perfect role-model name, relating to Shakespeare's brilliant and spirited lawyer in The Merchant of Venice, and is now also a Hunger Games name .
Another Shakespearean Portia was the wife of Brutus in Julius Caesar, based on a historical character. In the 1940s, when the name was most used, there was a popular radio soap called Portia Faces Life, the heroine being – what else? – a brilliant and spirited lawyer.
Portia is a recommended choice, even though some people might think you named your child for the car. Just don't spell it Porsche, which may sound the same but has a totally different and – despite the aspirational brand – less refined image.
Namesake Portia de Rossi actually started life as Amanda/Mandy.

(Or fortunately, if you love them and want them to stay rare!) Maxima got some attention in 2015 when Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan used it for their daughter, but few parents have copied them.
The Nissan Maxima is a car model.

The field of nature names is constantly expanding to include all species of flowers and trees and animals and birds and even fish. In addition to its appeal for anglers, Pike recalls Zebulon Pike, the explorer who discovered and gave his name to Pike's Peak.
While Pike also shares the friendly feel of names like Mike and Ike, the word pike can also be a noun or verb referring to a long sharp weapon used to do not-very-friendly things to people. It is also one syllable away from a slur against Traveller people heard in the UK, so maybe this is one to avoid.
