Greek Mythology Names 2

A list of the names of ancient Greek Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, Heroines, Monsters, etc., etc.

Unusual and rhythmic, Macaria is the feminine form of the ancient Greek Makarios or the Latinized Macarius. It could be an unexpected way to get to cool nickname Mac, without using Mackenzie, Mackinley, and similar.

With an appealing joyful meaning and a connection to several ancient saints, is sporadically used in the US, occasionally given to a small handful of girls. Masculine form Macario is slightly more familiar, give to around 30 boys each year.

Macaria

Cyrene was a mythical nymph and huntress who was beloved by the god Apollo. He founded a city named after her in what is now Libya and made her the queen. Derived from Greek and pronounced with three syllables, it may come from Kyros meaning "authority, supreme power", giving the name gravitas and distinction.

The name also appears in the Bible, borne by Simon of Cyrene, the man who carried Jesus's cross before he was crucified.

Cyrene

An enchanting ancient Greek name belonging to the Greek goddess who was created from a cloud by Zeus and so became goddess of the clouds and mother of the centaurs. The name Nephele is not widely known but as among modern parents become used to Phoebe, Penelope, and Persephone, it may become one of the ancient Greek goddess names that's back in the mix.

Nephele

The mythological queen whose perpetual weeping for her slain children turned her into a stone has always cast a pall over this name. Still, when other names with less-than-savory associations -- Delilah, Ophelia, Persephone -- are becoming popular, parents might want to consider this one of the more unusual mythology names for girls.

Niobe

This mythological sea monster, as described in Homer's Odyssey, lives on one side of a narrow channel of water opposite her counterpart, Charybdis. Scylla is described as having 12 feet and six heads on long snaky necks, each head having a triple row of sharklike teeth. She had the habit on snacking on passing sailors, including several of Odysseus's crew.

There are two other Scyllas in Greek mythology: a princess of Megara who betrays her city and sabotages her father, and a one of the Danaids, notable for killing her cousin Proteus. Pronounced as SIL-uh in English but as skul-lah in Greek, it is derived from skyllo, meaning to "pluck, tear, plunder, and torment".

While its meaning and mythological connections may feel rather bloodthirsty or off-putting to many, Scylla has been appearing in the US stats since 2017, with 7 babies given the name in a recent year. Sometimes used as a short form of Biblical Priscilla (if spelled Priscylla),it would make a daring choice, with a somewhat familiar sound. It may be best, however, to save it for a fictional character.

Aisa is a concise feminine name with diverse cultural origins. In Japanese, it can mean 'loved one' or 'one who is cherished,' while in Swahili traditions, it relates to 'life' or 'living.' The name also appears as a variant of Aisha, an Arabic name meaning 'alive' or 'prosperous.' This multicultural background gives Aisa global appeal and versatility. Though not widely common in Western countries, the name has seen occasional use throughout different periods and regions. Its brevity makes it distinctive yet easy to pronounce across languages. Aisa carries positive connotations in its various cultural contexts, typically relating to concepts of life, love, and vitality. The name's simple elegance and cross-cultural significance make it appealing to parents seeking something meaningful yet uncommon.

Athens the city takes its name from Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and courage. If you prefer place names to mythological names and like gender neutral names better than those that are gender distinct, Athens may be a good alternative to Athena.

Made cool by that final X (as seen in Felix, Lennox, and Rex), Pollux is the Romanized form of Polydeukes, the half-twin of Castor, and the son of Zeus and Leda. Associated with the Gemini constellation, the name means "very sweet".

While Castor is held back by the oil, parents may be put off Pollux by its similarity to words like pollock, polyps, pollution, and pox — and with its almost rhyme, beginning with B.

If you can look past that, as a handful of parents in the US have been doing since at least 2008, it could make an unexpected way to honor a Paul or a Polly and a way to nicknames Lux and Lockie.

Pollux

Derived from a Spanish title of the Virgin Mary, Guadalupe, Lupe has both a spiritual and animal meaning. In relation to its long form, it is associated with a convent in Spain and the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to a Mexican man in the 16th-century. Taken as a stand-alone name, it derives from the Latin word for "wolf", lupus.

Appearing in the US Top 1000 for boys and girls in the first half of the 20th-century, it fell out of fashion in the 60s, and a recent year saw it given to just 7 boys and 9 girls respectively. In comparison, 244 girls and 31 boys were called Guadalupe the same year, while alternative short form Lupita was used 38 times.

Themis was the Titan — one of the Elder Gods (or in this case Goddesses) — of Justice and Order, usually depicted blindfolded and holding the scales of justice. The mother of the Fates and the seasons, Themis may appeal to fans of mythology, but also to those who want a name that conveys balance and order.

Pronounced as TEH-MEES in classic Greek and as THEE-mis in English, it could work as a highly unique alternative to Thea, Aurora, Artemis, and Athena. Given to five girls in a recent year, it has only ever appeared in the US stats 3 times, though it has seen more use in Brazil, Greece, and Cyprus.

Themis

Aegeus is a masculine name with deep roots in Greek mythology. It belonged to the legendary king of Athens who was the father of the hero Theseus. The name likely derives from the Greek word 'aix' meaning 'goat' or possibly from 'aigialos' meaning 'sea shore.' In mythology, King Aegeus tragically threw himself into the sea (later named the Aegean Sea after him) when he believed his son had died. This name carries strong classical associations and projects an air of dignity and ancient wisdom. While never common in modern usage, Aegeus appeals to parents with an appreciation for mythology and classical history. The name offers the rare combination of historical weight, distinctive sound, and a connection to one of Western civilization's foundational cultural traditions.

There is some disagreement whether there are one or two figures named Alpheus in the Bible. There's an Alpheus who's the father of James and an Alpheus who's the father of Levi, and if James and Levi are brothers, then that's the same Alpheus. Or not.

Alpheus

Son of Zeus known for musical abilities, an edgy choice for music-minded families.

Amphion

A starry Greek name which may appeal to those who like Aster and Orion, Asterion is borne by a number of figures in Greek mythology, including a king of Crete, one of Jason's Argonauts, and a river god of Argos. Perhaps most notably, however, it is the name of the Minotaur — also called the Minoan Bull — who lived in the Labyrinth in Crete

Described as being part bull and part man, the Minotaur was the son of Pasiphaë, the queen of Crete and a scared bull. The queen was cursed by Poseidon to fall in love with the bull, in order to punish her husband, King Minos, who was meant to sacrifice it to the sea god, but instead kept it due to its beauty.

The name also appears in the form Asterius, while Astraea is considered a feminine variation. It also coincides with a word for a part of the skull.
