DarlingDoe's Really Very Long List

Pretty much every name I've ever seen and liked. A long list getting longer all the time.

A rare Welsh form of Flora and Fleur, ultimately taken from the Latin flos, this floral choice is given to a handful of girls most years in Wales. To date, its peak was in 2018, when 15 babies received the name, while in a more recent year, it was given to four girls.

Notable bearers include musician and writer Fflur Dafydd, and singer and presenter Elin Fflur, who uses her middle name as her professional surname.

Heaven, Peace, Serenity: parents seem especially attracted to word names that signal paradise, but Halcyon sounds quite feminine, and might conjure up the sleeping pill Halcion.

Harro is a masculine name with Germanic origins, particularly common in northern Germany, the Netherlands, and Frisian regions. It derives from elements meaning 'army' or 'warrior,' reflecting the martial values of ancient Germanic cultures. The name has a long history dating back to medieval times but remains relatively uncommon in English-speaking countries. Harro is characterized by its strong, distinctive sound and straightforward pronunciation. The name experienced limited popularity in the mid-20th century in northern European countries but has remained relatively rare. For families with German, Dutch, or Frisian heritage, Harro offers a connection to ancestral roots while providing a distinctive alternative to more common Germanic names.

Humphrey is an old name that might have faded completely were it not for that Bogie flair. A royal name in Britain, where it's used somewhat more frequently, Humphrey might just have some life beyond Bogart here, especially with the recent interest in the names of Golden Age Hollywood stars. His first name was the maiden name of his mother, Maud Humphrey, a well-known illustrator who used baby H. as a model.
Humphrey was brought to England by the Normans and was made famous by Duke Humphrey, the fifteenth century Duke of Gloucester and youngest son of Henry IV, a noted patron of literature, who appears in Shakespeare's Henry IV. In other literature, Humphrey Wasp is a character in Ben Jonson's Bartholomew Fair, and the eponymous hero of Tobias Smollett's early novel Humphrey Clinker. In James Joyce's Finnegans Wake Humphrey Climpden Earwicker represents the everyman.
Bottom line: An interesting name with a noirish edge.

Like Violet, Lavender and Lilac, Ianthe is a purple flower name. Chosen by the poet Shelley for his daughter, Ianthe has a poetic, romantic, almost ethereal quality. In the ancient myth, she was the daughter of Oceanus, supreme ruler of the sea, and also a Cretan woman so beautiful that when she died the Gods made purple flowers grow around her grave.
 Iantha is also used.
Ianthe was a favorite of the pastoral poets of the seventeenth century and then again in the early nineteenth. She appears in the works of Shelley, Barbara Pym and Georgette Heyer. Writer Richard Brautigan named his daughter Ianthe.

Idony is a Medieval variation of Idonea, itself an English form of Iðunn, the Norse goddess of spring and eternal youth. She was notable for carrying, keeping, and guarding the box of apples from which the gods would eat to regain their youth.

The exact meaning of the name is debated, though one possibility is that it comes from the Norse elements ið meaning "repeated, again" and unna meaning "to love", in turn giving it the over all meaning of "love again". Other sources focus more on the first element however, suggesting it means "ever young" o "the rejuvenating one".

Appealing perhaps to those who like Ingrid, Valkyrie, Ianthe, Ebony, Sidonie, Briony, Indie, and Adelie, Idony makes a rare choice, having never appeared in the US stats. In fact, the only time it's appeared on any popularity charts anywhere was back in 1377, when it ranked at #35, which meant it was used nearly as often as Anne and Constance, and more than Eve and Mary.

Idonie, Idonia, and Idonea are other English forms, while the Icelandic form is Iðunn (which has ranked in the Top 50). Idun recently ranked in the Swedish Top 100 too.

Pronunciation varies by language and culture. English speakers tend to say IH-duh-nee, with the same emphasis as injury, while others say ih-DOH-nee or eye-DOH-nee.

Lettice is still occasionally heard in upper-class British families, but we fear it would cause too much salad-green teasing to be considered in the U.S. Calling your little Lettice Lettie could help make the name more user-friendly, or go all the way to the original Letitia.

Lief is a masculine name with Norse and Germanic origins, typically considered a variant spelling of Leif, which means 'heir' or 'descendant.' The most famous bearer was Leif Erikson, the Norse explorer believed to be the first European to reach North America. This spelling variation maintains the same pronunciation but gives the name a slightly different visual presentation. The name has a strong, concise quality with its single syllable and straightforward pronunciation. Despite its brevity, Lief carries significant historical weight and conveys a sense of adventure and discovery through its association with exploration. The name has remained relatively uncommon, giving it a distinctive character while still being recognizable and easy to pronounce.

Luned is a feminine Welsh name with ancient Celtic origins, appearing prominently in Arthurian legends as a handmaiden to Lady Owain. The name is associated with the Welsh word for 'image' or 'idol' and has connections to lunar symbolism. In Welsh mythology, Luned is portrayed as clever and resourceful, known for her magical ring that could render the wearer invisible. Despite its rich heritage, Luned remains uncommon outside of Wales, giving it a distinctive quality for those seeking a name with Celtic roots. Its short, melodic pronunciation (typically LOO-ned) and unique character make it appealing for parents drawn to names with mythological backgrounds and Welsh cultural connections.

Milou and her near-identical twin Malou are adorable names popular throughout Europe; they're contractions of Marie or Mary and Lou or Louise. The Malou spelling will probably be easier for English speakers to pronounce; Milou may be conflated with Milo.

Fun fact: Milou is the French name of the dog Snowy in Tintin.

A lyrical Welsh name with both poetry and ruggedness, Myfanwy can mean "my fine, delicate one", "my woman", or "my beloved", depending on whether you consider the second element as derived from manwy, banwy or annwyl. While the pronunciation (muh-VAHN-wee) wouldn't be intuitive to those unfamiliar with the Welsh language or with Welsh names, the name is given to a small handful of babies in its native Wales most years.

Notably appearing in a 19th-century song by Joseph Parry and a poem by Richard Davies, the name was also borne by the 14th-century noblewoman and poetic subject, Myfanwy Fychan. Other Myfanwys include poet Myfanwy Haycock and actresses Myfanwy Waring and Myfanwy Talog.
