Uncommon favorites

It is surprising how many times I thought a name was unique only to find that everyone else had the same idea. This is my place for ones I like and think are truly unusual.

    • Echo
      • Origin:

        Greek mythology name

        "echo or sound"
      • Description:

Echo, the pretty, resonant name of a legendary nymph, was the heroine of Joss Whedon's sci-fi series Dollhouse. Nick Hexum, of the band 311, named his daughter Echo Love.
    • Flett
      • Iver
        • Kepler
          • Nova
            • Origin:

              Latin
            • Meaning:

              "new"
            • Description:

Nova has the feel of both newness, from its meaning, and great energy as an astronomical term for a star that increases suddenly in brightness before fading.
          • Pax
            • Origin:

              Latin
            • Meaning:

              "peaceful"
            • Description:

Pax, one of the variations of names meaning peace that are newly popular in these less-than-peaceful times, got a lot of publicity when chosen by Brad & Angelina for their Vietnamese-born son. Parents attracted to Pax may also want to consider Paz, the unisex Spanish version, or Paxton, a growing-in-popularity surname choice that shares that magical X-factor.

              Greek mythology name

            • Description:

Old-style creative name of the Greek mythological earth mother of all the gods. A lot better than the Roman equivalent: Ops. Rhea reentered the US Top 1000 in 2015. Its only previous appearance on the list since 1968 was 2004.
          • Ryker
            • Origin:

              German

              "rich"
            • Description:

As a stylish name, Ryker has three big things going for it: its Ry beginning (as in Riley, Ryder, and Rylan), its two-syllable rhythm, and its er ending. A nice surprise for many is it's "rich" meaning. While this may not be a factor beyond New York City, there is an infamous prison there called Riker's Island. Ryker is one of the trendiest German names for boys in the US.
          • Syba
