pearlsandwaves's list "Percy Jackson Characters" of 20 great name ideas: Mellie - Cupid!

Percy Jackson Characters

Names of the characters that appear in Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo, and Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods/Heroes

Mellie is not Millie and it's not Nellie, though it will forever be confused with those too more familiar nicknames. It's cute, too, and while some of the names it's usually short for may be sailing into the sunset (so long, Melody!), others like Amelia are rising through the ranks and may give Mellie a new chance to shine as a cute girls' nickname. Just be prepared for endless confusion.

Mellie

The Roman god of the underworld, the former ninth planet, a cartoon dog...but not a baby.

Pluto

Also written as Dionysos, Dionysus was a son of Zeus and the god of wine, revelry, fertility, and dance. Likely meaning "godlike one of Nysa" — Nysa being a region in Greece where Dionysus was raised — you could also interpret it as "godlike one of the trees".

Bold and vibrant with a touch of fun, Dionysus is less likely to be heard than its descendants: Dennis, Tyson, and Tennyson. Nevertheless, it's not too dissimilar from higher ranking options like Adonis, Dorian, Atticus, and Darius.

Ten boys were called Dionysus in the US in a recent year, while Dionysos has never featured.

Adventurous parents are starting to look back to names of ancient gods like Mercury, Zeus, and Apollo. This one is also a planet and a metallic element, and has a friendly nickname, Merc. The Roman god Mercury, which derives from the Latin words for trade or wages, is the patron of tradesmen and travelers and the fastest-moving planet in the solar system. Mercury is the planet associated with the sign of Virgo, so this is one of the prime names for Virgo babies.

Music lovers will also appreciate the connection to the legendary Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara.

Mercury

Chiron derives from the Greek word kheir, meaning "hand." The mythological Chiron was a centaur revered for his wisdom. He is depicted in the Sagittarius constellation.

Chiron

So far out it's almost ready to be let back in.

Chuck

Prometheus of Greek Mythology was a Titan known for creating humankind out of clay. He stole fire from the gods and gifted it to humanity, which triggered the rise of civilizations. Prometheus might be better known as Ridley Scott's 2012 film of the same name.

Cassiopeia, the name of a mythological mother who became a stellar constellation, is challenging but intriguing, and has all those softening Cass nicknames available. And with all names Cass-related trending, Cassiopeia may be an unusual route to a stylish name.

With the rise of other otherworldly and mythical choices, from Apollo to Jupiter to Juno, Cassiopeia may just feel more possible for mortals now than ever before in its long history.

Some sources say the meaning relates to the cassia berry or tree, and may be "cassia juice," making this a botanical as well as a mythological name.

Cassiopeia

This Roman mythology (and planet) name would be very hard to handle. It derives from a root meaning cloud.

Neptune

Flowing and intriguing, Eurydice is a name from Greek mythology, borne by the wife of musician Orpheus. After she is poisoned by a snake and condemned to the underworld, Orpheus attempts to rescue her, but fails after breaking the condition set by Hades that he mustn't look back at her.
</rb>
Meaning "wide justice", Eurydice has provided creative inspiration in the arts, namely as the subject of operas by Monteverdi, Haydn and Gluck, an eponymous play by Jean Anouilh, and paintings by Titian, Rubens and Poussin. The myth has also provided inspiration for Tennessee William's drama Orpheus Descending, David Almond's novel A Song for Ella Grey<//em>, Céline Sciamma's film Portrait of a Lady on Fire and the song Talk by Hozier.
In pop culture, it turns out that in the U.K. TV cult favorite Absolutely Fabulous, the outrageous Patsy's full name is Eurydice Colette Clytemnestra Dido Bathsheba Rabelais Patricia Cocteau Stone.

Some may see the name as a heavy choice but with weighty four-syllable Greek myth names like Persephone in style, could Eurydice become a more usable option? With nicknames Edie, Dizzy, Riri or Cece perhaps? In fact, 10 girls were given the name in a recent year in the US: still a small number but significantly more girls than previous years.

The modern Greek form is Evridiki (ehv-ree-DHEE-kee) which could get you nickname Kiki too.

Eurydice

Hestia is the name of the Greek goddess of the hearth, home and chastity. Though Hestia has been long dormant as a name, it's a possibility for the parent in search of a classic name with deep roots that's also unusual. It's one of the Greek goddess namesthat's both familiar and distinctive.

Hestia

Also spelled as Argos, this name appears in Greek mythology, borne by Odysseus's loyal dog, by a giant creature with a hundred eye, a son of Zeus and King of Argos, and an Argonaut ship builder. The name is associated with vigilance, guardianship, and watchfulness (in relation to the many-eyed creature) and with faithfulness (owing to Odysseus's dog being the first to recognize the returned hero).

In the UK, this name may feel far too close to the retailer Argos, though elsewhere, it could be a shiny, mythological choice, similar in sounds to August, Atlas, and Atreus. Six boys were called Argus in the US in a recent year.

Argus

Dated British favorite that never caught on in this country, where Jade remains the green gem of choice.
Interesting namesakes: British writer Beryl Bainbridge and British aviatrix Beryl Markham.

Beryl

Made cool by that final X (as seen in Felix, Lennox, and Rex), Pollux is the Romanized form of Polydeukes, the half-twin of Castor, and the son of Zeus and Leda. Associated with the Gemini constellation, the name means "very sweet".

While Castor is held back by the oil, parents may be put off Pollux by its similarity to words like pollock, polyps, pollution, and pox — and with its almost rhyme, beginning with B.

If you can look past that, as a handful of parents in the US have been doing since at least 2008, it could make an unexpected way to honor a Paul or a Polly and a way to nicknames Lux and Lockie.

Pollux

Khione was the name of several minor figures in Greek mythology, of which the most notable is the nymph who Hermes turned into a snow cloud. Khione works as both a high-brow mythological name and a Kardashian-trendy K name.

Khione

Io may be one of the slightest names in the book, but there aren't many two-letter names with as much substance as this Greek mythological example. Io, a name used for the largest moon of Jupiter, was in classic myth raped by Zeus and escaped from him by changing herself into a cow.

Only if you're hoping for your son to become a wine-besotted poet. To the ancient Romans, Bacchus was the god of agriculture, wine and fertility.

Bacchus

Old-school nickname ala Spike and Babe that's favored by some hipster parents.

Butch

Cadmus is the name of the serpent-slaying hero of Greek mythology who also founded the city of Thebes and is credited with inventing the alphabet. Its ancient feel might appeal to modern parents — especially since Cadmus Peverell is a human Harry Potter character, one of the three original owners of the Deathly Hallows.

Cadmus

The name of the Roman god of love, the son of Venus, considered so romantic as to be unfit for mere mortals. Yet now that Romeo and Venus herself are fair game for modern babies, why not Cupid?
