Anelya's list "Pokemon Leaf Green" of 20 great name ideas: Chester - Dan!

Pokemon Leaf Green

...So I continue my journey in the Pokemon world. Names here are not of pokemon, but of trainers and npc.

Chester is a comfortable, little-used teddy-bear of a name that suddenly sounds both quirky and cuddly.
Chester was a Top 100 name in the US from the 1880s to 1929, gradually fading till it finally dropped off the list completely in 1995. But it's popular now in England and Wales, where it ranks in the Top 100

Chester has been seen on old TV shows like Gunsmoke and The Life of Riley, then reappeared later on The Nanny and The Wire. Chester Alan Arthur made it presidential, it was a World War II hero via Admiral Chester Nimitz, the comic world associates it with Chester Gould, creator of Dick Tracy, and it has modern musical ties to Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have a son named Chester.
Nickname Chet has, like Hank, a friendly retro vibe.

Some parents just use Steve on the birth certificate, but it doesn't have the breezy charm of trendy short forms like Max, Sam, and Jake. Regardless of how much you love Steve as a given name, it might be smart to give your son a longer option to fall back on.

Yazmin is a feminine name that represents an alternative spelling of Jasmine, which derives from Persian origins meaning "gift from God" or referring to the fragrant jasmine flower. This variation, with its distinctive 'Y' beginning and 'z' in the middle, gives the name a contemporary and multicultural flair while maintaining its connection to nature. Particularly popular in Hispanic and Arabic-speaking communities, Yazmin blends exotic appeal with familiar pronunciation. The name evokes images of the delicate white jasmine flower, known for its sweet fragrance and beauty. While the traditional spelling Jasmine saw peak popularity in the 1990s, Yazmin offers a fresh alternative that feels both modern and timeless. The name carries associations of grace, beauty, and natural elegance.

Denise was a French favorite of the fifties and sixties but is less chic now. In 2020 it broke back into the Top 1000 after a five-year hiatus, catapulted into style by reality TV star Denisse Novoa — but it dropped out again the following year.

Despite all the "hanging," "dangling," and "pregnant" chad jokes of the 2000 election, this saint's name and remnant of the Brad-Tad era didn't get a boost in popularity. But Chad still holds some surfer-boy appeal for a number of modern parents.

Josh is a friendly, approachable masculine name that originated as a shortened form of Joshua, which comes from Hebrew meaning 'God is salvation.' While Joshua has biblical significance as the successor to Moses, Josh emerged as a standalone name in the 20th century, embodying a casual, down-to-earth quality. It gained significant popularity in the 1970s through the 1990s in the United States, ranking consistently in the top 100 names. Josh conveys an accessible, unpretentious character with its brief, one-syllable structure. The name suggests a straightforward, trustworthy personality and has maintained steady usage without seeming dated or trendy. Josh represents a perfect balance of familiarity and timelessness in contemporary naming practices.

Agatha until recently summoned up visions of martyred saints, mauve silk dresses, and high lace collars, but now that some dauntless excavators have begun to resurrect it, we're sure more will follow their lead. Actor Thomas Gibson used it for his daughter in 2004.
Popular in the middle ages, Agatha was brought to England at the time of the Norman Conquest by a daughter of William the Conquerer. Agatha is the name of the patron saint of firefighters and nurses, and in more modern times has been closely tied to the period mysteries of Agatha Christie. P.G. Wodehouse created the vivid character of Bertie Wooster's daunting Aunt Agatha.
Agatha also boasts the cute nickname Aggie. The French version, Agathe, is tres chic there.

Lori, with this sleek modern spelling, was an extremely popular name in the middle of the 20th century, ranking among the Top 100 girls' names from the early 1950s until the early 1980s.

But it was that very popularity that sent the name plummeting in popularity, as all the Baby Boomers named Lori began having babies of their own, making Lori (and Laurie) a mom name.

As Lori waned, Lauren rose, reigning at the top of the charts from the eighties through the oughties.

And now that Lauren too is becoming a mom name, what's taking its place? Classic Laura, matriarch of all the Loris, Lauries, and Laurens, is showing signs of revival in the US and ranking in the girls' Top 100 in many diverse European countries, cultures, and languages.

So baby Laura named in honor on grandma Lori brings the name full circle -- with today's little Lauras perhaps naming their own baby girls Lori and Laurie.

Jovan, the name of the supreme Roman deity, seems more extraterrestrial now -- and it's also firmly attached to a perfume label. Some parents may see it as a variation of Giovanni, the Italian for John. It is in fact the Slavic variation of John and may be an original way to honor an ancestral John.
