The names of these characters range from traditional to outrageous and everywhere in between. Due to the millions upon millions of children and adults alike who love these characters and Animal Crossing in general, I've compiled this list of USABLE Animal Crossing names. Tough yet gentle in look and sound, Hugh was a Top 100 choice in the US back in the late 19th-century and while it's never reached those heights again, it has always managed to remain in the Top 1000 — all bar 2008 that is when it dropped just below. Since then, it has remained familiar but not overused in the US, featuring outside the Top 500.

Used sine at least the 10th-century when it was borne by a French king, it was brought to England by the Normans and became a popular choice in the Medieval period. Generally considered a variation of the Germanic Hugo, with the wise and imaginative meaning of "mind, intellect", it is also used as an Anglicized form of the Gaelic names Aodh ("fiery one") and Ùisdean ("stone island; stone of good fortune") owing to the pronunciations EH, UGH, and OOSH-chan

As such, Hugh has always been particularly prevalent among the Irish—there have been 20 Irish Saint Hughs, and it's traditionally associated with the O'Donnell clan. Hugh was an early immigrant to the New World, where there were two Hughs in the first English-speaking settlement in America. Hugh's biggest drawback is its sound, barely more than an exhaled breath.

Actor Hugh Jackman adds a dash of the romantic hero, and other prominent Hughs include Hugh Laurie (born James Hugh), Hugh Grant, and Hugh Dancy. Then there's Hugh Hefner, known to the world as Hef.
Hew and Huw are the distinctively—probably too distinctively—spelled Welsh forms.
A modern alternate option would be the surname Hughes, which would fit in well with Hayes or Wells.

Rudy is one of those names that has been consistently in the US Top 1000 since the early 20th century without ever becoming overwhelmingly popular. It peaked back in the 1930s, when it briefly entered the Top 250, though more recent years have seen it make the latter end of the charts. Certainly more stylish than its parent name, Rudolph, which has been relegated to reindeers in English speaking countries, Rudy was given to 300 boys in a recent year.

Currently on the rise in England and Wales, Rudy ultimately comes from the Germanic Hrodulf meaning "famous wolf". It has notably appeared in the 1993 sports movie, Rudy, though it may be recognized more recently as the name of the dinosaur in the third Ice Age movie and in the book and film adaptation of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
The Crosby Show), it was notably used by actor Jude Law and actress Sadie Frost for their son in 2002, which led to its first appearance on the England and Wales charts the following year. More recently, it was chosen by Molly Moorish-Gallagher (daughter of the Oasis star, Liam) and footballer Nat Phillips for their son in 2025.

Like Peggy and Patsy, Penny is a peppy vintage nickname that fell out of favor (and the Top 1000) for a while, but has recently rebounded by reentering the charts in 2013. Expect it to continue gaining traction on the heels of Penelope.

A Top 200 choice in England and Wales, Penny could be considered a word name, as in the copper coin used in England and the US, and as a musical choice, thanks to The Beatles song, Penny Lane.

Emerald is the intriguing color and jewel name of the deep green stone treasured as far back as ancient Egypt — it's supposed to open one's heart to wisdom and to love and be good for strengthening relationships — which could make for an interesting, unusual name, particularly with the popularity of so many Em-starting names.
Emerald is the birthstone of May, making it extra appropriate for a girl born in that month. Some pleasant associations: the Emerald Isle and the Emerald City.
Esmeralda is the Spanish version.

Even though in the past Clyde may have been identified as half of the infamous outlaw duo with partner Bonnie Parker—especially after the 1967 movie in which he was played by Warren Beatty—Clyde has always had an element of jazzy cool that could overcome all the rest.
The name relates to the River Clyde that runs through Glasgow, Scotland. It was a Top 100 name in the US through the 1930s, and has made a comeback in the last few years, reentering the Top 1000 in 2013. As of 2024, it is given to around 360 babies each year,
Clyde Griffiths was the doomed protaganist of Theodore Dreiser's 1925 novel An American Tragedy. In the field of sports, basketball Hall of Famer—and later Dancing With the Stars participant—Clyde Drexler was known as Clyde the Glide, and Walt Frazier's nickname was Clyde. Catherine Keener and Dermot Mulroney have a son named Clyde.

This jaunty Celtic surname — one of the most common family names in both Ireland and the US — is totally viable as a first. The arguably most famous Murphy is TV's Murphy Brown, and indeed the name was given to more than twice as many girls in a recent year. Nevertheless, it remains a totally viable option for boys.

After being absent since the 1950s, the name reappeared in the US charts in the 2020s and while at first it was a solidly gender neutral name, the split is now 70:30, with 783 girls and 341 boys receiving the name in a recent year.
Derived from the Irish Murchadh, it has the cool meaning "sea warrior", perfect for ocean lovers and environmentalists.

There have been countless notable surnamed Murphys, including the currently prominent Eddie and Cillian. while Murphy was also the eponymous protagonist of Samuel Beckett's first published novel.
One possible negative: the association with Murphy's Law--if anything can go wrong, it will. But if Rowdy and Ryatt can make the charts, well maybe that chaotic energy could be part of the appeal.

Murphy

An attractive French word name known here via former child TV star Soleil Moon Frye, aka Punky Brewster. It started to be lightly used in the U.S. in the 1920s and is now attracting some attention as both a sunny nature and an international word name. It's currently in the Nameberry Top 500.

Elina is one of the many variations of mother name Helen to make the US Top 1000 list, and is given to around 300 girls each year. While it might blend in among the Helenas, Elenas, and Alinas, it might be a good way to go if you want the eh-lee-nuh pronunciation or the potential for nicknames Elle, Ellie, or Ella.

Popular in Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Latvia, and Armenia, Elina is an international name that can also be spelled with various accents, depending on where it is used. Elīna is most often seen in Latvia, while Élina is sometimes used in France.

Keaton is an engaging surname with warmth, energy and a sense of humor, identified with silent comedian Buster Keaton and contemporary actors Michael and Diane Keaton. Given to around 290 boys in a recent year, it currently sits within the latter end of the US Top 1000.

Keaton derives from the name of a number places, which has led to a variety of different meanings, depending on which etymological root you follow. These meanings include: "place of hawks" from the Old English cyta; "river town" from the Old English ea; "hedged town" from the Cornish kee; and "Káti's (or Catta's) town", from an Old Norse given name, which ultimately means "merry, happy".

An alternative to Weston, Easton, Colton, and Keegan, Keaton is a friendly choice that could also get you nickname Kit.

Celia, splendidly sleek and feminine, is a name that was scattered throughout Shakespeare and other Elizabethan literature, but still manages to feel totally modern. Derived from the Latin Caelius, it means "heavenly".
Shakespeare has been credited with introducing Celia in As You Like It, and it was to Celia that the poet Ben Jonson penned the immortal line, "Drink to me only with thine eyes." Other literary Celias have appeared in works ranging from George Eliot's Middlemarch to T. S. Eliot's The Cocktail Party to Lionel Shriver's We Need to Talk About Kevin</em.>

While Celia has a similar sound to Cecilia, and may well be used as a short form of the longer name, the two have different roots. Cecilia comes from the Latin caecus meaning "blind", while Celia is from caelum meaning "heaven".

Familiar but not overused, Celia has been in the US Top 1000 since records began in the 1880s, however, it has been outside the Top 500 since the 60s. Also in the England and Wales Top 1000, it is a favorite in Spain, France, and Belgium. Said as SEE-lee-uh or SEEL-yuh among English speakers, in Spanish, it may be pronounced THEHL-ya or SEHL-ya, depending on region.

A bit of trivia: Celia is an anagram of Alice, meaning it could potentially work as an honor name.

Harry is the medieval English form of Henry, which derived from the Germanic name Heimrich, meaning "estate ruler." Harry was the nickname of all eight King Henrys; it is also a diminutive of Harold and Harrison.

Harry was everyone's elderly uncle until Princess Diana, following British royal tradition, named her son Henry but called him Harry. Then Harry Potter became a rage and Harry Styles of One Direction became the hottest boy bander of the new millennium. Thus, Harry's avuncular image was history. Harry is still much more popular in England, Ireland, and Scotland than it is in the US, but its classic yet unpretentious image makes it a recommended choice.

Harry was a Top 20 name in the US from 1880 to 1918, and continued in the Top 100 into the 1950s (hence the song "I'm Just Wild About Harry"), and has countless worthy namesakes, including Truman, Belafonte, and Houdini.

Among the celebs who have chosen this good guy name for their sons are David Letterman (it was his father's name), Simon Baker, and Billy Bob Thornton. It's also found in a number of movie titles from The Trouble with Harry to Dirty Harry to When Harry Met Sally.

Something to think about when using Harry: how does it sound in your accent? It might sound great, or it could sound a bit to hairy.

Parents who like Ben and Benjamin but find those forms too popular sometimes consider Benedict as a more distinctive choice. Unlike the Old Testament Benjamin, Benedict is the name of the saint who formed the Benedictine Order and of fifteen popes, including a recent one.
Shakespeare used a variant form--Benedick--for the character in Much Ado About Nothing. Other options are Bennett and Benno.
Benedict Cumberbatch is a British stage, film and TV actor, who has been seen as Stephen Hawking, William Pitt, Dr. Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster, and currently as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series.
Just one caveat: There is the link to that infamous traitor Benedict Arnold.

Popularized by Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt Jr., Teddy is a sweet but substantial choice, similar in style to the likes of Charlie, Freddie, and Bertie. Appearing in the US Top 1000 for most of the 20th-century, it disappeared in the 90s, but, as of 2023, it has been back in the charts.

Traditionally used as a nickname for Edward and Theodore, Teddy is of course associated with the cuddly teddy bear (named for the president), meaning "bear" names like Arthur might even get you to Teddy. Additionally, it could work for rarer choices like Tancred, Thaddeus, Endymion, and Edgar.

Hugely popular in England and Wales, Teddy appeared in the Top 50 in a recent year.

A simple one-syllable name that has been on the popularity list since the mid-1980s, Drake is most associated today with the single-named rapper (born Aubrey). The name peaked at Number 197 in 2010 and has since been on a slow decline, but it still can be counted among the stylish contemporary boy names starting with D.

Chelsea is still being used, with about 400 baby girls named Chelsea in the US last year. But it was much more popular a few decades ago, peaking at Number 15 in 1992.

Chelsea first entered the American consciousness in a major way via the character Jane Fonda played in On Golden Pond in 1981 and later of course was frequently in the headlines when Chelsea Clinton (whose name was inspired by the lyric of a the Joni-Mitchell-Judy Collins song "Chelsea Morning") became First Daughter.

Chelsea

Paula still seems somewhat stuck in the era of duo Paul and Paula bopping out the song "Hey, Paula." Two pronunciations are possible—the English "PAW-la" and the Portuguese "POW-la."
Modern bearers of the name include singer-songwriter Paula Abdul and comedian Paula Poundstone, as well as a character on My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Paula is still a common choice in Puerto Rico.
With the trend toward boyish nicknames for girls, we can't help but wonder whether there will be a new generation of little girls names Paulie or Pauley, both fresher than Paula.

Now that many dogs are named Max, it's safe to use this sleek, solid, regal name again for your child. And with the charm of its final x, its regal meaning, and its offbeat simplicity, Rex is definitely one to consider.
Coldplay's Will Champion used it for his twin son, and Natascha McElhone gave her little boy the doubly cool appellation Rex Coltrane, and Niki Taylor — intentionally or not — gave her son the full name of the British My Fair Lady star, Rex Harrison (who was actually christened Reginald). And quite fittingly, Rex is name of a toy T-Rex in Toy Story.
Other options: the French version Regis or the literal King.

An energetic and friendly Italian classic, Carlo is popular in its native Italy, but also familiar across Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, France, and Brazil. A variation of the regal French and English classic Charles, it is ultimately derived from the Latin Carolus and the Germanic Karl, meaning "free man".

In recent years, Carlo has seen renewed interest in the US, returning to the Top 1000 for the first time in over a decade. Given to more than 250 boy in the latest count, coming years may see attract more attention, after it become a modern saint's name in 2025.

British-Italian teenager Carlo Acutis was canonized as the first millennial saint by Pope Leo XIV, after two miracles attributed to him were confirmed. During his life, he was known for using his computer programming skills to promote Catholic devotion and has since been called the "Patron Saint of the Internet".

Other notable Carlos include footballer manager Carlo Ancelotti, writer of The Adventures of Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi, Olympic skier Carlo Janka, and father of Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte, Carlo Buonaparte, just to name a few.

This nickname for popular and traditional Joseph has a long history of being used as a given name all on its own. Nonetheless, everyone will always assume that Joey is short for the longer form. It might be nice for a potential son to have the option of a more professional and classic name to fall back on.

Joey

One of the first luxury brand names and the quintessential Booming Eighties status-conscious moniker; used by Donald Trump for his daughter, Tiffany has plummeted far from its high in the Top 25.

Tiffany first entered the Top 1000 in 1962, following the release of Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961.
