Middle Names (besides Rose and William)

Soft yet solid, Cedric was invented by Sir Walter Scott for the noble character of the hero's father in Ivanhoe, presumed to be an altered form of the Saxon name Cerdic ("bounty"), or the Brythonic name Caratacus ("loved"), though surname Sedgewick ("sword place", "place of victory") may have provided inspiration too. A truly literary choice name was later also given to Little Lord Fauntleroy, the long-haired, velvet-suited, and lace-collared boy hero of the Frances Hodgson Burnett book, who became an unwitting symbol of the pampered mama's boy.
Since then that stereotype has been broken partly by the Harry Potter character, Cedric Diggory, played by Robert Pattinson in the movies, and by general renewed interest in other old-fashioned names, like Cecil, Conrad, Stanley, and Clyde. As such, Cedric has been dipping in and out of the US Top 1000 in recent years and in the latest count, in was given to around 240 boys.

A major favorite in France back in the 70s and 80s when it made the Top 10, some noteworthy Cedrics have included comedian and actor Cedric the Entertainer, footballer Cédric Soares, and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

Classic yet spritely, Tatiana has long been familiar and popular in Russia and Eastern Europe, though it wasn't until the 80s that it caught on in the English-speaking world. With short forms Tiana, Tati, and Tanya, it is a versatile choice that has nevertheless seen a decline in use in recent year.

Tatiana was derived from Tatius, a Sabine-Latin family name of unknown origin, and notably borne by Titus Tatius, an ancient king who ruled over the ancient Italic tribe, the Sabines, who lived near Rome. The Romans used the name Tatius even after the Sabines died out and created the derivative forms Tatianus and Tatiana. The names were eventually disseminated throughout the Orthodox Christian world, including Russia.
Saint Tatiana, a third-century martyr, is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church, while Grand Duchess Tatiana Romanova, was one of the ill-fated daughters of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II. Also translated as Tatyana, the name appears in Alexander Pushkin's verse novel Eugene Onegin and the opera based on it, and it was used by Chekhov as well.
Tatiana Kennedy Schlossberg is the daughter of Caroline Kennedy, which helped make the name feel chic in France and the US in the 90s and early 2000s. Actress Tatiana Maslany (of Orphan Black), ice dancer Tatiana Navka, and comedian Tatiana Frank are other notable bearers of the name.

Tatiana peaked in 1999 in the US, when it ranked at Number 213, and while it had been on a slow decline since then anyway, it fell more rapidly in 2022 when the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out. It has since recovered slightly in the most recent stats, when it was given to 230 girls.

It was a surprise pick by one of the hip Dixie Chicks, Martie Maguire. Sally was popular in the eighteenth century and then again from the 1920s to the 1960s--it was just outside the Top 50 around 1940. Though it hasn't been heard as a baby name for decades, we can see Sally bouncing back, especially after her exposure as young Ms. Draper on Mad Men--the Nameberries rank it at Number 621, and it's a Top 100 name in Sweden.
Sally has a ton of notable references--a few we can single out are astronaut Sally Ride, actress Sally Field, the Sally Bowles character in Cabaret, the movie When Harry Met Sally and songs like Long Tall Sally and Mustang Sally.

Norman, perhaps because it sounds so much like the word 'normal', conjures up the image of a normal-looking guy with a normal kind of job-- not necessarily an image many modern parents seek for their sons. But though it's been off the national popularity list for several years, Norman is Number 694 on Nameberry. It was a Top 100 name for more than half a century, hitting a high in 1931 at Number 36, but today it's nowhere near one of the most popular boy names starting with N.
Norman has had a variety of notable namesakes over the years, from Americana artist Norman Rockwell to feisty novelist Norman Mailer to creepy mama's boy Norman Bates in Psycho.

Ulysses is one of the few U boys' names anyone knows -- with heavy links to the Homeric hero of The Odyssey, the eighteenth US president Ulysses Grant, and the James Joyce novel -- all of which makes it distinguished, if a little weighty, for a modern boy.

The Latinate form of the Greek Odysseus, the name means "wrathful" or "to hate", however, if you were after a more positive meaning, the word "odyssey" has come to mean "long, eventful journey". Ulysses was on the US popularity list until 2005, however, it has since declined, with 150 boys bearing the name in a recent year.
Former SNLer Anna Gasteyer made this bold choice for her son, perhaps inspiring others to follow her lead. George Clooney's character name in the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? is Ulysses.
Trivia tidbit: The presidential bearer was christened Hiram Ulysses Grant, but reputedly was all too happy when his first two names were reversed at West Point, as he had always been embarrassed by having the initials HUG.

The name more recently featured in the 2021 novel Still Life by Sarah Winman.

If you're looking for a name that's light and breezy, this could be it. A name from mythology: Zephyrus/Zephyr was the Greek god of the west wind, and with its similarity in sound to the likes of Stefan or Seth, its zippy Z initial and cool Y, it is primed to rise up the US charts.

Frequently seen in computer and video games thanks to its mystical quality, it is also a character in the children's book Silverwing, and in the Babar books--as a monkey. It features in the TV series My Little Pony, the short animated film How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, and in the manga series, One Piece.

Of all the botanicals, Fern has been one of the slowest to move back from the front parlor into the nursery, despite the appealing girl character in the children's classic Charlotte's Web. Fern was most popular from the turn of the last century through the 1940s, reaching a high of #152 in 1916. We can certainly see her rejoining the long list of popular greenery names.

Reality TV stars Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald recently named a daughter Fern, which could easily give it a boost.

May is a sweet old-fashioned name that hasn't been on the national charts in several decades, but is definitely sounding fresh and springlike. Parents are beginning to see it once more as one of the prettiest middle name options. May was as high on the list as Number 57 in the 1880s; it's now 228 on Nameberry.
May started as one of the innumerable pet forms of Mary and Margaret, as well as a springtime month name along with April and June. She's represented in literature by May Bartram in Henry James's The Beast in the Jungle and May Welland in Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence.
Actresses Emily Morton and Madeline Stowe named their daughters May, and Eric Clapton and Jodie Sweetin used it in middle place for theirs.

Monroe is a presidential surname which feels fresher than Jackson, Lincoln and Taylor. Marilyn Monroe is a famous female namesake, but her smart Scottish surname feels equally usable for either sex. Plus, we think old man nickname Moe would sound both cool and adorable on a baby boy today!

For a long time, Isadora has been overlooked in favor of Isabella, owing perhaps to its association with the tragic modern dancer, Isadora Duncan, or because parents would rather their daughter be a Bella than a Dora. Now, with Theodora back in the charts and vintage names in vogue, Isadora has been slowly gaining more attention over the last decade.

Derived from Greek, Isadora is the feminine form of Isidore, comprised of the elements Isis, the Egyptian goddess of the sky and nature, and doron meaning "gift". Isidora is an alternative but equally well-established spelling, used by a fourth century saint.

Quirky couple singer Bjork and artist Matthew Barney were ahead of the trends when they named their daughter Isadora back in 2002, while fictional Isadoras include Isadora Wing, the liberated central character of Erica Jong's 1973 bestseller Fear of Flying, Isadora Quagmire in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and the half-fairy-half-vampire titular character of Harriet Muncaster's series, Isadora Moon.

Given to around 150 girls in the US in a recent year, an Isadora could have the popular nickname Izzy, though Dora, Rory, Sadie, and Isa might be alternatives.

Percy is an adorable old name that is finally shedding its pampered Little Lord Fauntleroy image in this new era of boys with soft yet traditionally male names like Jasper and Elijah. Originating as an aristocratic Norman name, Percy became fairly widespread in England--and to some extent in the US--as an offshoot of the fame of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Cara is a simple, sweet, Italian endearment that enjoyed its greatest popularity from the 1970s through the 1990s, reaching a high of Number 189 in 1977. Despite the rising celebrity of English model/actress Cara Delevingne, who played Enchantress in Suicide Squad, Cara dropped off the Top 1000 in the US in 2020, perhaps because it sounds too close to the dreaded Karen.
I
Cara remains a highly popular choice in Ireland, perhaps used as an Anglicized form of the Irish Ciara or Ceara. the Evelyn Waugh novel Brideshead Revisited, the Cara character is French.
Damon Wayans took the endearment aspect even further when he named his now-grown daughter Cara Mia.

It is popularly claimed that the name Wendy was invented by Sir James Barrie in 1904 for the big sister character in his play Peter Pan, which was followed by the classic novel in 1911. Barrie supposedly took it from the nickname "fwendy-wendy", that he was called by a young girl acquaintance.

Although the character of Wendy Darling undoubtedly popularized the name across the English-speaking world – peaking in the Top 10 in several countries in the 1950s and 60s – it did actually appear rarely before that. It was likely derived from the Welsh name Gwendolen and its variants.

Wendy's heyday was once upon a time, but it's starting to undergo a style revolution. With other bouncy and peppy retro nicknames, like Sadie and Edie, rising, Wendy could be part of the next wave.
