garnetgal's list "Potential Male Character Names" of 20 great name ideas: Montgomery - Reginald!

Potential Male Character Names

This image of this distinguished Anglo-Scottish surname, drawn from the French place name of the ancient castle of Saint Foi de Montgomery, is rapidly shifting from fusty and formal to cool. And dashing short form Monty (or Monte) nudges it to cute.
Best-known bearer of the name is beautiful-but-tortured midcentury actor Montgomery Clift. Roger de Montgomery was a Norman nobleman who was made Earl of Arundel after he invaded England in 1066 and Sir Bernard Montgomery was a noted army commander in World War II. Montgomery is also the proper first name of Star Trek's engineer Scotty and, less flatteringly, the middle name of The Simpsons' evil Mr. Burns.

Wallace is so square could almost be ripe for a turnaround, especially with the hipness imparted by the British Claymation series Wallace & Gromit. And Wally makes an adorable Leave it to Beaver retro-style nickname.
A Top 100 name in the 1920s, as reflected in early film stars Wallace Beery and Wallace Reid, Wallace hung on in the Top 1000 until the early 1990s. A notable modern namesake is poet Wallace Stevens.
Wallace stems from the names first given to the native British people as distinct from the Anglo-Saxons, later applied to the people living in Wales. Quentin, an offbeat name with lots of character, relates to the Latin for the number five and is by far the subtlest and most usable of the Latin birth-order names, masculine as well as stylish and distinctive. It was borne by a third-century saint and came to England with the Normans.
Sir Walter Scott wrote the novel Quentin Durward in 1823, about a young, upper-class Scotsman, and Quentin Compson is both a male and a female character in William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. Real-life bearers include movie director Quentin Tarantino; eccentric British author Quentin Crisp (born Denis); and Quentin Blake, illustrator of Roald Dahl books. Theodore Roosevelt had a son named Quentin.
Trivia tidbit: St. Quentin is the protector against coughs.

Friendly and rugged at the same time, Anders is a Scandinavian form of the Andrew and Andreas family, used across Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and in the US. Consistently in the American Top 1000 since 2010, a recent year saw it given to around 300 boys.

Meaning "strong, manly, masculine", Anders ultimately comes from the Greek andreios and has been used in Sweden since at least the 14th century. Once common among priests and farmers in the medieval period, it went on to become the forth most popular Swedish boy name of all time.

Less popular than the patronymic Anderson in the US, it is likely said as AN-ders or AHN-ders in English. In Swedish, however, it's AN-dush, in Norwegian its AHN-nush, and in Danish, its AHN-us.

Trivia tidbits: The patronymic Andersson is the second most popular surname in Sweden, while in Denmark, Donald Duck is called Anders And.

Since Aurelius was given the supermodel seal of approval by Elle Macpherson, it has joined Augustus as an ancient Roman name that feels usable today. Slightly mystical and magical with a golden hue, Aurelius is grounded by its similarity to other popular options like August, Atlas, and Elias.
In ancient Roman history, the name is associated with Marcus Aurelius, a Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, the last of the so-called "Five Good Emperors." He is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers. He granted his name en masse to citizens of the empire who didn't have one, making Aurelius a common and default nomen (family name) towards the later years of the empire.

Rarely used in the US before the 2000s, Aurelius began to climb in 2010, perhaps because model Elle Macpherson was back on the runway and hosting Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model, reminding parents of her son's name. Alternatively, its rise may have more to do with its appearance in the popular series, The Hunger Games.

Aurelius made its debut to the US charts in 2025 when it was given to 230 boys compared to 190 the year prior. In joined its variants Aurelio and Aurelia, both of which also rose up the ranks.

Musician Sean Ono Lennon and model Charlotte Kemp Muhl named their son Aurelius in 2026.

A tributary of the River Clyde in Scotland, called in Scottish Gaelic Abhainn Cheilbhinn: caol ("narrow") or coille ("wooded") + abhainn ("river"). As a surname, it derives from the name of the river.

As a given name, it first entered usage in the 1920s in the UK, inspired by renowned British physicist, mathematician and engineer William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, who worked at the University of Glasgow for over fifty years. When he was ennobled by Queen Victoria in 1892, he chose the honorary title Kelvin, after the river which flows past his laboratory. The unit of absolute temperature kelvin (K) is also named in his honor.

In the US, Kelvin caught on as a first name in the 1950s – no doubt influenced by Kevin, which was really taking off in popularity around the same time, as well as Calvin and Melvin, which were falling out of use. It peaked in the early 1960s and has been dropping steadily since, but remains in the Top 1000 today.

More popular in its Layton spelling, Leighton is rising in popularity in the US for both sexes simultaneously, although this spelling remains more popular for girls for now – no doubt helped by actress Leighton Meester. Lleyton – as in Australian tennis star Lleyton Hewitt – is another, even more complicated, variant spelling.

The sophisticated Edmund and its nearly-identical French twin Edmond are coming out of mothballs now that Edward, inspired by Twilight, is once again a hot name. In fact, it's already a fairly popular choice on Nameberry and a solid presence on the England and Wales charts, where it's featured in the latter half since the 90s.
Dervied from Old English, Edmund is comprised of the elements ead and mund, meaning "rich, fortune" and "protection" respectively. As such, its meaning can be interpreted as "wealthy or fortunate protector". Regal and strong, Edmund's praises have been sung by Jane Austen ("There is nobleness in the name of Edmund") and John Keats ("Had my name been Edmund, I would have been more fortunate.")
Famous bearers include the English astronomer Edmund Halley, after whom the comet was named, poet Edmund Spenser, great Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean, and New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary. Literary Edmunds appear in King Lear,, Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, Dickens's Little Dorrit, and C.S Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia.
Edmund reached its highest point of popularity in the U.S. in 1914, when it was Number 130 but it hasn't appeared in the charts since 1997, making it an uncommon alternative to the Top 300 Edward. The Edmund spelling was chosen for 175 babies in a recent year, while Edmond was picked for 63.

While Edmund is considerably rarer than other Ed- names then, if popularity does bother you, it is still worth bearing in mind that 1580 boys were called Edward in the US last year, while Edwin, Eduardo and Edgar are all in the Top 500. Edison and Eddie feature in the latter end of the charts and there's the popularity of nicknames Ted, Teddy, and Freddy to consider too, even more so if you happen to be in the UK. Should that put you off? Not necessarily, but it is something to think about if you're seeking rarity.
Eamon is the cheery Irish version.

Kingsley is a sophisticated Harry Potter name that entered the US Top 1000 in 2013.

Duncan is jaunty, confident, and open, a Scottish royal name that's brimming with friendly charm and makes it into our golden circle of names that are neither too popular nor too strange. Popularity aside, Duncan is one of the most classic Scottish names for boys.
From a surname based on a clan name, Duncan was the name of a Scottish saint and two early Kings of the Scots. The beneficent Duncan I, who lived in the eleventh century, was immortalized in Shakespeare's Macbeth.
The brave and handsome Major Duncan Heyward is one of the main characters in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans. Other cultural references include Duncan Idaho, the only character to appear in all of Frank Herbert's Dune novels; Duncan MacLeod, the immortal protagonist of Highlander; one of Garp's sons in The World According to Garp; and singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik.
David Bowie's son Zowie changed his name first to Joey and then finally to Duncan.

Duncan peaked int he late 90s and has been a downfall since, even falling out of the Top 1000 in 2021 — but made a reappearance in 2022.

Eleazar is a distinguished Biblical name--in which it appears several times-- ripe for the picking following the stardom of Eli, Elijah, and other similar names.
Eleazar is also a Twilight name, first appearing in the Stephenie Meyers book Breaking Dawn.
It's related most closely to Eliezer, which also appears in the Bible many times. The name also belonged to three great Talmudic scholars.

Biblical name Cain was, until recently, seldom heard outside of the Old Testament and soap operas. Although Cain's murderous actions will always make this name difficult for some, Cain, Eve and Adam's firstborn, was a farmer - making this a good choice for those with farming connections. Long outshone by Abel, Cain is starting to find a broader audience, helped along by homophones Kane or Caine.

The short form Archie is so open and friendly --and very trendy in the British Isles--that some parents are now beginning to consider the formerly fusty Archibald as well. SNL comedians Amy Poehler and Will Arnett are one couple who made this breakthrough choice.
After being introduced to England in the twelfth century, Archibald became especially popular in Scotland, where it was in the Top 20 until the 1930s, but later took on a stuffy, aristocratic air. In the US, Archibald ranked as high as Number 279 in 1889.
A notable literary namesake is poet Archibald MacLeish, and Archibald was the full name of both comic-book star Archie Andrews and curmudgeon Archie Bunker. And of course suave Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach.

Vaughn, also commonly spelled Vaughan, has been used quietly over the years, reaching a peak of Number 349 in 1949. It is now in the process of rediscovery, being seen as a good Sean alternative or an updated way to honor an ancestral Paul (which also means small).
In the recent past, Vaughn Meader was a comedian famed for his JFK impressions, and Vaughn Monroe was a popular singer-bandleader.
More frequently seen as a last name than a first, Vaughn has drawn particular attention in recent years via leading man Vince Vaughn, and before that was notable in the entertainment world by The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Robert Vaughn, singer Sarah Vaughan, and guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. Michael Vaughn is a fictional character on Alias, played by Michael Vartan.

Ash has Southern charm plus the arboreal-nature appeal. Plus your little boy will prize Ash as the name of the hero of the Pokemon cartoons. Ash can also be a dashing short form of Asher, Ashton, or any other "Ash" name.

Norman, perhaps because it sounds so much like the word 'normal', conjures up the image of a normal-looking guy with a normal kind of job-- not necessarily an image many modern parents seek for their sons. But though it's been off the national popularity list for several years, Norman is Number 694 on Nameberry. It was a Top 100 name for more than half a century, hitting a high in 1931 at Number 36, but today it's nowhere near one of the most popular boy names starting with N.
Norman has had a variety of notable namesakes over the years, from Americana artist Norman Rockwell to feisty novelist Norman Mailer to creepy mama's boy Norman Bates in Psycho.

Perseus is an up-and-coming name with a plenty going for it, so it's no wonder it's almost tripled in usage since the 2010s. Given to nearly 170 boys in the US in a recent year, Perseus ticks the boxes as an ancient and mythological choice with contemporary possibility, plus an accessible and intuitive nickname to go with it.

Likely derived from the same root as Persephone, Perseus means "to destroy": a violent meaning perhaps, but reflective of the figure in Greek mythology. Borne by a heroic son of Zeus, Perseus is known for defeating Medusa and for saving Andromeda from a sea monster.

Used by writer Rick Riordan as the full name of one of the central characters in his popular Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, Perseus "Percy" Jackson, the name provides an unexpected way to the vintage nickname. So old it feels new, Perseus may appeal in the same way Atticus, Orion, and Atlas do: approachable but magical at the same time.

Perseus

Monroe is a presidential surname which feels fresher than Jackson, Lincoln and Taylor. Marilyn Monroe is a famous female namesake, but her smart Scottish surname feels equally usable for either sex. Plus, we think old man nickname Moe would sound both cool and adorable on a baby boy today!

Monroe

Noam is an underused modern Hebrew name with any number of attractive attributes attached to its meaning; it doesn't have the biblical weight of Noah, but could make a more distinctive alternative to that popular choice. Noam is a Top 10 boys' name in Israel. Noam is also a place-name in south Israel, where it is sometime used for girls. Its most prominent bearer is the distinguished linguist and social activist Noam Chomsky (born Avram Noam).
Noaz is an even more unusual Hebrew choice.

Now seen as the chap in the smoking jacket in a 1930s drawing-room comedy, Reginald has actually been on the US popularity list every year since 1880.
A name that was quite common throughout the MIddle Ages, in the modern era Reginald has been associated—in its nickname form—with star athletes like Reggie Jackson and Reggie Bush, plus it's the birth name of Elton John. In literature, Reginald Wilfer is a character in the Dickens novel Our Mutual Friend; Reginald is also the first name of capable and oh-so-proper butler Jeeves in P.G. Wodehouse's books, and, indeed, it still reflects his pompous image.
