About Shamari
Shamari appears to be a modern name with possible connections to various linguistic traditions. It may relate to the Hebrew name Shemariah (meaning 'protected by God') or could be a creative variant of names like Shomari (Swahili, meaning 'forceful' or 'masculine'). The name emerged in the United States during the 1970s and gained modest popularity through the 1980s and 1990s. While originally more common as a masculine name, Shamari has been used for both boys and girls, with increasing usage as a feminine name in recent decades. The name represents creative naming practices that developed across various American communities during the late 20th century, drawing on diverse linguistic elements to create names with distinctive sounds and rhythms.
Shamari for boys
Shamari is a gender-neutral name predominantly used for boys, with several possible origins. It may be derived from Hebrew, meaning 'guardian' or 'protected by God,' or it could have African roots. Some see it as a variation of Shomari, which comes from Swahili meaning 'forceful' or 'masculine.' The name gained recognition in the United States in the 1990s, partly through R&B singer Shamari Fears of the group Blaque. With its melodic sound and distinctive quality, Shamari has maintained modest but consistent usage. The name appeals to parents seeking something unique with potential cultural significance, while its ending with 'i' follows a popular contemporary naming pattern for boys' names that sound modern and energetic.
Pronounced sha-MAR-ee.
As of October 2026, Shamari ranked #13215 in US births in 2024 SSA, peaked at #2074 in 2000.
