Majfrid

A rare Swedish compound name, blending the name Maj with the Norse element fríðr, Majfrid has several meanings, depending on which Maj root you follow. One possibility is "beautiful May", taking Maj as the word for the spring-time month, while another is "beautiful mother" or if you see Maj as a variant of Maja, itself borrowed from the Greek Maia.

You could also interpret it as meaning "beloved and beautiful" — or perhaps "bitter and beautiful" or "beloved drop of the sea" — if you take Maj as a diminutive of Maria.

Used very, very occasionally in Sweden, alternative forms include the Norwegian Maifrid, the Faroese Maifríð, and the modern Mayfrid.
