About Lyndsay

Lyndsay is traditionally a feminine name, though this entry lists it as masculine. It originated as a Scottish surname derived from the place name Lindsey in Lincolnshire, England, which means 'island of linden trees.' As a given name, Lyndsay emerged as a variant spelling of Lindsay/Lindsey, which became popular for girls in the mid-20th century. This particular spelling gained modest popularity in the 1970s-1990s when variations on traditional names were trending. While primarily used for girls, some cultures and families have occasionally used it for boys, reflecting the name's origins as a surname that could apply to any gender. The name carries associations with nature and Scottish heritage, with a contemporary feel due to its distinctive spelling.

Lyndsay is a feminine name representing a spelling variant of Lindsay, which originated as a Scottish surname derived from the location name "Lincoln's island" or "linden tree island." This particular spelling with a 'y' became popular in the late 20th century as parents sought distinctive ways to spell traditional names. Lyndsay peaked in popularity during the 1970s and 1980s, riding the wave of surname-to-first-name conversions that characterized that era.
