About Laufey

In Norse Mythology, Laufey is the mother of Loki, whose name comes from lauf meaning "leaf" or "foliage" and ey which functions as either a feminine suffix, or as an element meaning "island". While Marvel fans may be more familiar with Laufey as Loki's father, in the 13th-century Norse mythology textbook, the Prose Edda, it is a feminine name.

Predominantly used in Iceland, but occasionally in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway too, Laufey is notably borne by the singer Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir, known professionally as just Laufey.

The pronunciation may be loosely translated as LOY-vay or LUUW-vay (like the French feu) in English.

Pronounced LOW-fay.
