About Cenred
An Old English cognate of the Germanic Conrad, this Anglo-Saxon form has been recorded with a number of spelling variations throughout history, including Cænred, Coenred, Cenered, and Cenredus. Meaning "brave counsel" or "keen advice", it has a strong but level feel.
Notably borne by Cenred of Wessex, a 7th-century nobleman who may have helped his son rule as King of Wessex, and by Cenred (or Coenred) of Mercia, an 8th-century king, it also appeared in the show BBC Merlin.
While it is traditionally pronounced as KEHN-rehd, the aforementioned show pronounced it as SEHN-red, perhaps inspired by the likes of Cedric.
Pronounced KEHN-red.
