About Califia
The name of a dairy-alternative brand, Califia is a form of Calafia, a 16th-century literary creation, made up by writer Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo for his novel, The Adventures of Esplandián, in which it was borne by a queen. It is likely Montalvo drew inspiration from the Spanish translation of the Arabic title, khalifa, (califa), then embellished it into into something that sounded more name-like.
The literary pagan warrior queen of the aforementioned book went on to inspire the names of the American and Mexican states of California. As such, both this form and Calafia could make an interestng nod to California, or provide an unusual route to Callie, Fia, or Calla.
Pronounced kuh-LIF-ee-uh.
