About Amanita

Associated with a genus of fungi (which includes the red and white spotted kind, the fly agaric), the actual name may come from the Greek Amanus (the ancient name for the Nur Mountains in Turkey) or the Latin Amantius (meaning "loving"). Used in a number of Spanish speaking countries, the name could additionally be an elaborate diminutive of Ama- names, such as Amanda, Amadea, and Amada, associating it with the meanings "loved" and "beloved".

Also used in India, Amanita may be a blend of the Arabic and Sanskrit elements aman ("peace") and nita ("guided, led, conducted"), in turn giving it the meaning of "guided by peace".

Pronounced am-uh-NEE-tuh.

As of October 2026, Amanita ranked #13539 for girls in US births in 2024 SSA, peaked at #8465 for girls in 1973.
