Gothic Baby Names

Radcliffe is a masculine name of English origin, derived from an Old English place name meaning 'red cliff.' It began as a surname indicating someone who lived near a red-colored cliff or slope before transitioning to occasional use as a given name. Radcliffe carries aristocratic and academic associations, notably through Radcliffe College (formerly the female counterpart to Harvard) and several historic English estates. As a first name, it remains quite rare, giving it a distinctive, sophisticated character. The name suggests refinement, education, and English heritage, appealing to parents drawn to uncommon names with historical significance. Its nickname potential (Rad, Cliff) offers versatility while maintaining its distinguished full form.

This genial Irish surname feels much more current than Donald.

Desdemona is as Shakespearean as a name can be, but because the beautiful and innocent wife of Othello came to such a tragic end, her name has been avoided for centuries. But at this point in time, there might be some adventurous parents willing to overlook that.
Jeffrey Eugenides used the name for a character in his novel Middlesex.
And for those seeking some celestial cred, Desdemona belongs to the Shakespearean Portia Group of satellites, which also includes Bianca, Cressida, Juliet, Portia, Rosalind, Cupid, Belinda and Perdita.

Desdemona

Mysterious. In 2016, 13 baby girls in the United States were given this unusual word name -- at least according to the Social Security Administration. We can't help but suspect that some of those baker's dozen had parents who just refused to tell the federal government their daughter's name.

A daring word name with a touch of mystique, Shadow is an edgy choice for a baby that some may say is best reserved for pets. Nevertheless, it has been appearing in the US stats for girls since 1974 and for boys since 1987.

It was at its peak in 1993, when 22 girls and 36 boys recieved the name, (possibly thanks to the release of the Honda Dodge Shadow range or the apperance of Shadow, the golden retriever in Disney's 1993 Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey). In a more recent year, it was chosen for 6 girls and 14 boys in the US.

Borne by characters in the show and book American Gods and in the game franchise Sonic the Hedgehog, it has similar vibes to Raven, Moon, and Jinx, and similar sounds to Shiloh, Marlow, Shay, and Shannon.

Shadow

Familiar due to the English musician Siouxsie Sioux, singer of the 1970s-80s rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Apart from its complicated look, the inclusion of the Native American tribe name Sioux in this name feels inappropriate by today's standards. Stick with Susie or Suzie.

This lovely surname of the three novel-writing sisters, now used as a baby name, makes a fitting tribute for lovers of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. While the original name took an umlaut over the e, modern English speakers may find that more trouble than it's worth (though big fans of the Brontës may well disagree).
Trivia note: The Anglo-Irish clergyman who was the father of Charlotte, Emily and Anne changed his name from the original Brunty. According to scholars, the family pronounced the name bron-tee, though today, you're likely to hear this pronunciation used interchangeably with bron-tay.

In Australia, the name is more likely to take inspiration from Bronte Beach in Sydney. It was named after Lord Nelson, the 1st Duke of Bronté. He got his title from a town in Sicily, itself named after a mythological Cyclops.
Many people first noticed the name in the film Green Card, as the name of the Andie MacDowell character.

Familiarly used in the 90s and early 2000s in the UK, Bronte fell out of style in the 2010s, but more recently, it has been coming back in a big way. In the latest stats, it ranked just outside the Top 500 in England and Wales, while in the US, it was given to just 14 girls.

Bronte

This obscure name found in Sinclair Lewis's 1923 novel Babbitt is a bit hipper than most other is-ending names like Janis and Doris. Some sources consider it a variation of Tanith, who is a Phoenician moon goddess and fertility figure, while others say it is a North American indigenous name from the Cree culture, meaning daughter. It may in fact have two separate derivations and meanings, but in any case is a lovely and unusual name.

Viollet is a delicate feminine name with French origins, derived from 'violet,' referring to the purple flower and color. It can be considered a diminutive or variant spelling of Violet. The name carries connotations of daintiness, elegance, and natural beauty. Historically, Viollet may have functioned as a surname, as exemplified by French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. As a given name, Viollet offers a subtle twist on the more common Violet, which has experienced growing popularity in English-speaking countries. The name evokes Victorian sensibilities while maintaining a sweet, graceful quality that feels simultaneously vintage and fresh.

Zephyr may not be a name often heard in the U.S., but its variations are used throughout Europe. Zephyrine, a cousin in sound and feel if not in fact to such lovely names as Severine and Seraphina, has distinctive possibilities.
