Traveling Lite Baby Names

Short, sweet, and sharp, this multicultural choice is currently popular in Croatia, Czechia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. While not in the charts elsewhere, it is familiar in English speaking countries, and in the Netherlands.

The name has a number of different meanings depending on which root you follow. It can be a Czech or English feminine form of the names Ivo and Ives, which derive from the Germanic iwa meaning "yew tree". Alternatively, it could also be a feminine form of the Scottish and English name Ivor, originating from the Old Norse Ívarr meaning "bow warrior", although sometimes interpreted as also meaning "yew".

From its Bulgarian, Croatian, and Serbian roots, Iva can mean "willow tree", though it might also be a Slovak and Slovene short form of Ivana, a feminine form of Ivan, ultimately a form of John, meaning "god is gracious".

Iva packs a lot into its three letters, and in the US, it could make a familiar-but-underused alternative to Eva and Ivy.

Homophonous with Mae and May, the beautiful (literally) Mei is poised to climb the charts. The hero of the 2022 Disney/Pixar film Turning Red is a Chinese-Canadian teen named Meilin "Mei" Lee, which may boost the name ever further.

Oskar is to Oscar as Jakob is to Jacob: more distinctive and continental.

Mayla is a modern feminine name with several possible origins. It may be a variation of Maila, which has Finnish roots, or it could be related to Maela, a Breton name. Some consider it a blend of the popular names May and Layla. The name has a melodic, gentle sound with its flowing consonants and feminine ending. Mayla has grown in popularity during the 21st century, particularly in the United States, as parents have been drawn to names with the popular '-la' ending sound. The name conveys a sense of freshness and natural beauty, possibly evoking connections to spring (May) depending on the interpretation. Though still relatively uncommon, Mayla has been steadily rising in usage.

The boys' name Elon is best known today as the name of Elon Musk, eccentric billionaire founder of Tesla and SpaceX. With Canadian singer Grimes, Elon Musk has a son with an even more unusual name, X Æ A-12.
Before Musk arrived on the scene, Elon was the name of a Biblical judge. Long obscure, naming your son Elon today would signal an admiration for Musk rather than the Good Book.

Taken on its own merits, Elon is a sleek, attractive name with a strong nature meaning that's rare but also has deep roots: A total winner. But now that shiny name is feeling a bit....Musky.

Cosy and warm but with plenty of substance and strength, Tess is a literary diminutive that works perfectly well as a stand-alone name. Stylish in the Netherlands, it currently sits outside the Top 1000 in the US, where Tessa and Teresa are currently preferred.
Perhaps the most iconic and memorable Tess is the heroine of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, the moral center of the tragic novel. Typically derived from Theresa, the name is associated with harvest time, though it may also be used as a nickname sunny Welsh Tesni, aristocratic Contessa, and rare Otessa.

The name ranked in the US and UK charts back in the 2000s and 2010s, but has since been displaced by longer form Tessa, but we could easily see it returning to the charts in coming years. Chosen by fashion writer Plum Sykes in 2010 and by actor Luke Macfarlane in 2023, other notable bearers include writer Tess Gerritsen and presenter Tess Daly.

International alternatives include Swedish Tessan and Dutch Tessel.

Iconic folk singer Joni Mitchell lends this vintage nickname a cool, bohemian feel, while the streamlined spelling feels more contemporary and confident than the sweeter, cosier Joanie. While it may have disappeared from the US charts back in the 1980s, over in the nicknaming-loving UK, Joni has ranked in the Top 500 in recent years.

Used as a nickname for Joan (the feminine form of John, meaning "God is gracious"), Joni could also work as a diminutive for Joanna or Josephine. Given to 106 babies in the US in a recent year, it has serious potential to rise along with other cute and spunky retro nicknames like Sadie and Edie, Billie and Birdie.

German, Slavic and Scandinavian form of Clara, which is a Top 100 girl name in multiple European countries, including Austria, Croatia, Iceland and Poland. While Clara is fashionable in the US, the Klara spelling retains an Old World air.

Klara

Common Russian name familiarized here via cosmonaut Yury Gagarin and a character in Dr. Zhivago, but we don't see it ever gaining permanent resident status.

Rio is one of Japan's most popular girls' names, constantly sitting in that country's Top 10. Of course, Rio may also stem from the Portuguese and Spanish word for river, and the Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro. A truly international name for a cosmopolitan baby!

In the US, Rio is gender neutral but tips decidedly toward the male side, with about 500 baby boys named Rio last year versus 100 baby girls.

Lars is a perfect candidate for a cross-cultural passport: it has been heard often enough here to sound familiar and friendly, yet retains the charisma of a charming foreigner.
In this country Lars has been particularly associated with two Danes--Metallica's Lars Ulrich and film director Lars von Trier. In the 2007 movie Lars and the Real Girl, protagonist Lars Lindstrom was played by Ryan Gosling.

Can Linus lose its metaphorical security blanket and move from the Peanuts page onto the birth certificate? We think it has enough charm and other positive elements going for it for the answer to be yes.
In Greek myth, Linus is both a musician and poet, the inventor of rhythm and melody who taught music to Hercules. In the Christian era, Linus was the name of the second pope, Saint Peter's successor, while in modern times chemist Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize twice.
Humphrey Bogart as Linus Larrabee won the heart of Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina, and Matt Damon played Linus Caldwell in three of the Oceans movies. There's also Linus Baker, one of the central character's in T.J. Klune's popular novel, The House in the Cerulean Sea.
Linus is currently in or around the Top 50 in Germany, Sweden and Norway, and is one of the most popular boys' names on Nameberry. In the US, it was given to around 130 boys in a recent year, making it an underused, but not totally out there choice.

As with many names, the pronunciation varies, depending on language and location. Among English speakers, the first syllable is said to rhyme with eye or pie, making it LYE-nuhs. In Swedish and German, it would be more like LEE-noos, the oo sound short, like that in took or shook, while in its traditional Greek, it would be LEE-NOS.

International forms include the French, Russian, Bulgarian, and Ukrainian Lin (LEHn, the Lithuanian Linas and the Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese Lino (LEE-no).

Elif is the Turkish form of Alif, the name of the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. Actor Natalie Portman gave another spelling to her son, Aleph.

In Turkey, Elif is unisex but especially popular for girls – it's been a Top 5 choice there since the early 1990s, and also ranks highly in such other European nations as Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Along with its alphabetical meaning, Elif can also mean "slender", from the Turkish phrase elif gibi, literally "shaped like Elif."

Lou, all by itself, is become fashionable for girls, which usually makes a name LESS fashionable for boys. But Lou, like Bill or Jim, is rarely used on its own for boys anyway. (You wouldn't name a boy Frederick Lou the way that girls are named Mary Lou or, in the case of Keri Russell's new baby, Willa Lou.) Long form Louis is getting cool again and, with the Lewis spelling, is the Number 2 name in Scotland.

While Rumi has received attention in the contemporary US as the name of Beyonce and Jay-Z's young daughter, it's most famously the name of a (male)13th century Muslim mystic and poet. The most famous Rumi poem,"The Diver's Clothes Lying Empty", has inspired many modern literary works, including a novel with a similar title by Vendela Vida.

Lula is one of the livelier nickname-names with the fashionable double-L sound: It joins Lulu, Lila, Lily, and Lou among the trendiest names today. Lula might be short for Talula and sisters or for Lucy or Louise, or may stand on its own two adorable feet. Lula was actually a Top 50 name in the late 1880's and continued in the Top 100 for a couple of decades more.
Bryan Adams named his second daughter Lula Rosylea, sister of Mirabella Bunny, and master character namer J. K. Rowling has a Lula in her novel The Cuckoo's Calling.

Lumi may be a rare girls' name in the USA and England, but it comes in the Top 50 in Finland, where it means snow. Given the popularity of Winter, Holly, Ivy and many other wintery-christmassy names, we think that short and spunky Lumi definitely has potential for greater usage outside its home country as one of the more unusual names for Christmas babies.

Lumi can also be considered an Albanian name, derived from the word lumë meaning "river" and inspired by the name of the northern Albanian Luma tribe. In this case, it would be considered a unisex choice and has been used evenly, though very rarely, between the sexes in Albania.

Another possibility is that it could come from the Filipino word lumay meaning "gentleness, moderation, manners", making it a sweet and friendly choice but with a grounded meaning.

Given to nearly 90 babies in the US in 2024, use of the name had increased tenfold since 2014.

Lumi

Often stands alone in Israel, but rarely here.

Lior is a unisex name frequently heard in Israel, capturing the popular light theme through its meaning. For English speakers, the one down side is possible pronunciation confusion with "liar," though it's really lee-OR, with a long e sound and emphasis on the second syllable.

Oslo, the capital city of Norway, makes for an intriguing new place name, especially with its bookended O's, as in Otto and leads to cool nickname Ozzie. One Berry has already used it and we predict others will follow; in fact, stats suggest it is used eight times more often than it was a decade ago.
