Soft and Gentle Boy Names

Atlas, Cosmo, and Evren have caught on in recent years, and this Indonesian name, ultimately from the Sanskrit bhuvana has that similarly worldly, cosmic meaning, and a powerful, yet gentle air about it.

Buana

A gentle yet vibrant name of Sanskrit origin, this musical choice means "flute". It is connected to the Hindu god Krishna who is often depicted as playing the instrument. Notable bearers include actors Murali Siddalingaiah and Murali Sharma and cricketers Murali Vijay Deshabandu Muralitharan "Murali".

A gentle name with a playful and spirited air, Tamlin appears in a traditional Anglo-Scottish ballad that tells the story of Tamlin who is abducted by the Queen of Faeries and later rescued by his true love. It plays on the folktale motif of winning a lover by holding them through various trials and transformations.

Also appearing as Tamas-Lin, Tamlane, Tamlene, Tambling, Tam Lin, and Tam-a-Line in different versions of the ballad, Tamlin is a diminutive of Tam, the Scottish equivalent of the English Tom, ultimately from the Greek Biblical name, Thomas. It may therefore be interpreted as meaning "twin", or, as it is a diminutive, "son of Thomas".

Tamlin appears as a character in Sarah J Maas's book series, A Court of Thorns and Roses in which part of his story is loosely based on the traditional Tam Lin ballad.

Rarely used as a given name, Tamlin may nevertheless gain attention thanks to the book series, or appeal to those looking for an unusual way to honor a Thomas.

Elmir can either be an alternative form of the Old English Elmer, tying it to nobility and fame, or it is a popular Azerbaijani choice that blends the Turkic element el with the Arabic amir to form a name with a commanding meaning but gentle sound.

Gentle and poetic and most often heard in Wales, Emlyn joins Emrys as soft, interesting alternatives to popular Em- names like Emmett and Emery. Sometimes viewed as a Welsh variation of Emiliano, it more likely comes from the Welsh em and glyn meaning "around the valley" (or possibly from llyn, giving it the meaning "around the lake").

Emlyn was one of the seven ancient districts of Wales and while it may lean feminine to American ears - perhaps as a spelling variant of Emmeline - there are plenty of masculine namesakes, including footballers Emlyn Williams, Emlyn Hughes and Emlyn Mulligan, Welsh Physicist Emlyn Rhoderick, and Emlyn A.G Watkins, a police officer awarded for bravery. Writer Jenny Nimmo also used it in her novel, Emlyn's Moon.

2023 saw a number of vintage rarities coming back into style in the US, and Emlyn was one of them. Used on more than 5 boys for the first time in a century, perhaps it could fit in with other rising choices like Ephraim and Ellis.

Emlyn

Laid-back and humble, with a distinctive down-home charm.

Associated with the Jewish prophet and author of the Book of Amos in the Old Testament, Aamos is the Finnish and Estonian variation, ultimately deriving from the Hebrew amas meaning "load, burden", or more figuratively, "carried by God".

It may be one to watch out for in Finland in coming years, following a 2026 poll from a Finnish magazine which asked parents what they thought the most beautiful baby names were. The poll (which allowed parents to vote 1-3 options from a list of 100 or write in their own choice) saw Aamos ranking in 3rd place for boys, despite being absent from the previous Top 100 in Finland.

The magazine suggested the interest in Aamos may result from a more general interest in international names that are popular outside of Finland (such as Atlas, Isla, and Noel) and because it fits into the trend for soft, smooth names, like Onni, Elias, Aapo, Emil, and Aatos.

Appearing several times in Greek mythology, Pallas is an epithet of Athena, the goddess or wisdom, and, depending on which version of the legends you follow, is also borne by a (female) childhood friend of Athena; by a giant son of Gaia, whom Athena slays; a Titan war god; a teacher of Athena; and a grandson of the King Evander, who features in Virgil's Aeneid.

Pronounced PAHL-LAHS in Classical Greek and PAL-uhs in English, it could mean "to brandish" or it could mean "youth".
