Top Dog Names 2022 Announced!

The most popular dog names 2022 are in! Rover released their annual data of the top dog names, and there's a new Number 1 female dog name leading the pack.

Longtime frontrunner Bella has finally been bumped down to #2, with Luna now taking the lead. New to the Top 10 female dog names are Lily and Zoe, replacing Molly and Maggie.

Max, Charlie, and Cooper still lead as the top three names for male dogs, but two newcomers entered the Top 10 in 2022 — Teddy and Leo, replacing Jack and Tucker.

Rising Dog Names

Names new to the dog Top 100 include Blu, Remi, Gunnar, Enzo, Arlo, Ozzy, Goose, and Kai for male dogs.

New names for female dogs include Maple, Blu, Mabel, Freya, Sage, Tilly, Sunny, Oakley, Sky, Birdie, River, and Mochi for girls.

Many of these names, such as Arlo and Ozzy, Freya and Sage, are having big moments in recent years as baby names as well.

Falling Dog Names

Names that left the Top 100 for male dogs include Bubba, Remy, Joey, Ruger, Tyson, Blue, Bo, and Gunner. For female dogs, Zoey, Lilly, Cali, Roxie, Paisley, Shadow, Delilah, Grace, Rose, Jasmine, Juno, and Trixie fell out of the Top 100.

Pup parents are beginning to favor more modern choices instead of the classic "dog names" like Buster, Boomer, Gizmo, Missy, Angel, and Sugar, which are all included in the list of fastest-falling dog names in 2022.

Alternative spellings of female dog names were also falling out of favor this year, such as Zoey, Lilly, and Cali, whereas the spellings Zoe, Lily, and Callie all rose in the rankings.

Previously well-loved friendly classics like Sam and Jake dropped significantly in 2022 as well. There was also a shift away from names that are often categorized as controversial, such as Dixie, Gunner, and Dakota.

Dog Name Trends

Pop culture continues to be a strong influence on dog name trends, with celebrity-inspired names like Lilibet, Bieber, and Jlo trending upward significantly.

Names inspired by the show Euphoria took the world by storm this year, with Fezco up a whopping 2,385%, and Fez, Rue, and Faye also showing big gains. Stranger Things-inspired names are also trending, including Erica, Jonathan, Joyce, Hopper, and Dustin. Yellowstone was another show that strongly influenced name trends in 2022, with Dutton, Teeter, and Rip trending for dogs.

Other notable character-related names that were especially trendy this year included Mirabel from Encanto and Maverick from Top Gun.

Food and beverage names continue to be trendier than ever, with some rising highlights including Sashimi, Calzone, Bologna, and Matcha. Alcohol-themed names that trended included Vodka, Truly, and Mai Tai.

Celebrity dog names that might spark trends of their own include Cardi B's word name Walk, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's food name Butters, and Serena Williams celebrity-inspired dog name Rafael Nadal.
