Scottish Baby Names: Announcements from Aberdeen
By Linda Rosenkrantz
There’s something so undeniably intriguing about reading the local birth announcements in real time as they’re published in various places. We always relish our own monthly roundups, as well as our friend Eleanor Nickerson’s frequent feature on her British Baby Names site, which also encompasses some Irish and Scottish names. But recently I found myself getting lost in the reveals of new Scottish bairns—all born in 2018– and couldn’t resist sharing some of my faves—particularly those with surprising first and middle combos. Some of these have distinct Scottish burrs, some don’t. Lots of Eilidhs!

Isla Elizabeth and Callum James Tait are my favorite girl and boy names. Honorable mention goes to Alice Lilly, Bella Mae, Isla Grace Maree, Merran Louise, Heath Robert, and Struan McClaren.

Orla Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Ernest! Super names. Orla is just so lovely; I wonder if it will start sprouting up on these shores? It seems to share a certain style with names that are already popular here. I love it! And, Fitzwilliam is solid, handsome, and rather unexpected! I’d use Fitz as the nickname, but you could also do everything from Will to Liam to Billy.
There were lots of beauties on this list, but those two stood out for me. Not really any terrible names on either the girl or boy list.

Ooh, I like almost all the names on this list, but I particularly love Orla Elizabeth and Zara Eilidh. With Isla, Ava, etc all being so popular here in the US, I could definitely see Orla following suit. And I have a huge soft spot for Eilidh in general–it’s just too bad the spelling/pronunciation would probably make it unusable here, at least for a first name.

I love Orla Elizabeth, Arrowen Juliet Eilidh Mairi, Nairn Martin Tegid, Teddy Stuart and Ossian Wallace.
I am surprised at how many times Eilidh is used as a middle name but not as a first! Personally, I prefer Eilis.

Oh, Ruaridh Gray has me swooning!
Also, Isla Hazel, Roman Graeme, April Iris, Callum James Tait, Arrowen Juliet Eilidh Mairi, Zara Eilidh, Angus Alasdair David, Odhran Fergus James, Ellis Stanley, and Teddy Stuart are all amazing.
I have a soft spot for Ciaran, too. I love seeing it being used!
So many beautiful names on the list, I truly love them all!!

I have a soft spot for Scotland, especially after traveling there last year. There are a lot of excellent names on this list. These stand out for their originality, and Scottish flair,

The opening paragraph reads as though the writer thinks Scotland isn’t part of Britain.

I live in Aberdeen and know three of these babies (unless there are duplicates). Can you please share the link that had the baby announcements? I’d be curious to see if my two are in there. Thanks!
