I think we will be seeing more nature/animal/word names being used: Wren, Bear, Fox, Wolf, North, Grey, etc.

Personally, I find myself suddenly loving softer masculine names like Jem and Colby; as well as dainty feminine names like Lace and Calla.

In January 2011 we did a Survey at uni and asked people what they thought would become popular names in the future. Funnily enough, three years later, some of our predictions appear on birth certificates now.

We predicted:

Emil
Amadeus
Ludwig
Jeremias (it was given to a boy born on New Year’s Day yesterday)
Justus (more than three throughout 2013)
Caspar
Melchior (read it in the newspaper maybe four weeks ago)

Hermine (came across a Baby Girl with that name maybe two months ago)
Helena
Ruth (newspaper)
Zoe
Ida
Greta (several in the papers)
Nele

My personal favorite is Jeremias. I hope it doesn’t become to popular.

– Trendy names you think will zoom to the top of the popularity lists.
-Harper. It’s been skyrocketing for years and shows no sign of stopping. I wouldn’t be hugely surprised if it hit the Top 10, though that might be a bit of a stretch.

– Unusual names you predict will become more widely used. (Names I think may hit the top 1000)
Girls:
Bentley
Elliott
Liv
Ellison
Honesty
Emme
Emmeline
Zooey
Grayson
Annaleigh
Wren and Aurelia – both were just one birth shy of the Top 1000 last year, have been rising for at least a few years and seem likely to break the Top 1000 this year.
Sylvie
Arden
Clementine
Lyra

– Celebrity or pop culture names that will command wider attention.
-Hunger Games names, i.e. Rue, Effie
-Divergent names, i.e. Beatrice, Tobias
-Elsa and Anna (Frozen)
-Bear (Bear Winslet)

– Names you find yourself suddenly loving more.
I used to dislike Alethea and Aloysia. But they seem interesting now.
I used to HATE Asher. But oddly, it’s been growing on me a little.

– Trendy names you think will zoom to the top of the popularity lists: Anna and Elsa (Thanks for ruining Elsa for me, Disney. Sigh.) Amelia, Isla, Clara, Eloise, Norah/Nora, Mila, — All have caught fire and will continue to rise, I think. As for the boys, I think there will continue to be a wider and wider split … The super traditional and the super unusual: A boy named Henry, a neighbor baby named Briar. A boy named Michael, a neighbor baby named Layton. A boy named Charles, a neighbor baby named Brycen. I hope these examples make sense. (And yes, I know baby boys named Briar, Layton and Brycen.)

– Unusual names you predict will become more widely used: I think we will see many more “old lady” and “old gentleman” names rise in popularity, especially those with more gentle nicknames. Robert/Robbie, Dorothy/Dorothea/Dottie, Mildred or Emilia with the nickname of Millie, Isadora/Izzy, Lucille/Lucy, Helena, Ruth/Ruthie. Also, Biblical names that are lesser-known will come into style: Saul, Ezra, Jonah, Micah, Dinah, Priscilla, etc. Some are already on the rise.

– Celebrity or pop culture names that will command wider attention: Hmmm. Perhaps some headliners from the Winter Olympics? Perhaps Grete, Gretchen, Noelle, Apolo, Anto, Tessa Virtue, Gracie Gold …?) Also, I think more parents will find a variation of Francis to honor the Pope: Francine, Francesca, Frances, etc.

– Names you find yourself suddenly loving more: Evangeline, Eva, Eva, Henrietta, Etta

These are some names that I think will become (even) more popular (some I like, some I strongly dislike): Aubrey, Charlotte, Amelia, Harper, Lucy, Ellie, Violet, Aria, Piper, Paisley, Nora, Mila, Penelope, Alice, Hadley, Cora.

Unusual names that will become less unusual: I think these names are contenders to enter the top1000 Wren, Sutton, Mabel, Margot, Emmeline, Louisa, Louise, Freya, Poppy and Tallulah

Names I think will be in the top 10? Lucy, Harper, Amelia and Lily. Not this year, but in the next decade at least. Which makes me sad and happy at the same time. It’s good that such great names are popular (instead of ugh, Mia, Hannah and Madison), but sad that I can’t use them now.

In the top 1000? Clementine, Aurelia, Wren.

Big bumps in popularity? Penelope, Aria, Eleanor will all continue. Also Louise, Matilda, Cecilia, Milena.

niteowl13 Says:

The Roses will become more popular for girls. (Rose and her sisters Rosemary, Rosalie, Rosalind, etc) Maybe even Primrose will get into the top 1000 thanks to The Hunger Games movies.
I also agree that nature names will be big. Vintage flower girls like Daisy and Ivy will likely break into the top 100 soon.
I predict more old man names for boys will be more popular and will get closer to the top 100. Walter (Breaking Bad), Calvin, Silas, Cyrus… Maybe I am a bit ahead of myself. Maybe it will take a bit more time.
I would be happy to see more old-fashioned names in the top 100 though.
