Gender: Female Meaning of Veruca: "wart" Origin of Veruca: Latin

Veruca Origin and Meaning

The name Veruca is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "wart".

Veruca is a name Roald Dahl made up for the horrid little girl Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A modern rock band adopted the name, though few parents familiar with the original namesake and meaning would choose to pass it on to an innocent child. Verruca is another spelling, but don't use that one either.

If it weren't for that little brat from Willy Wonka and the nasty meaning, this would honestly be a pretty name. But I do NOT recommend it for the aforementioned associations.

oliviamcdonald Says:

Yes Verruca, double R, is the proper word for wart. The difference in spelling isn’t enough to me! Especially as pronunciation is identical. Most people would be more way more familiar with warts than Slavic names, unless Slavic themselves.

Silver Jay Says:

Ya the only thing I think of when I hear this name is Veruca Salt and "Daddy, I want one!"

Please please PLEASE use Veronica instead...

Ella Says:

This basically makes Veruca Salts name Wart Salt.

AldabellaxWulfe Says:

A veruca is a wart that grows on the bottom of people's feet, and is quite common and well-known. So while I don't know about slavic-speakers, I do know that for English speakers this name is completely inappropriate.

paulapuddephatt Says:

The name is actually intended to mean "wart"? We called the ones we got on our feet (due to using our school's communal showers) "verucas". I had assumed that the name must have another meaning, but people are apparently calling kids "wart"???

Yana Says:

Where is this info from? It's wrong. Roald Dahl didn't invent this name. It's Slavic and means vivacious and strong willed. The Latin for wart is veRRuca, which is not a name any more than "Pulchritudo", which google tells me is Latin for "beauty".

lizway Says:

Oh my god, please, no. The meaning makes it even worse. Goodbye no I am gone and done with this
