About Shohei

Notably borne by baseball star Shohei Ohtani, Shohei can also be transcribed as Shōhei or Shouhei. As with many Japanese names, the meaning varies depending on what kanji combinations are used, but "soaring peace" or "gliding evenly" are those used by the baseball player. "Respect" and "prosperity" are other options.

While Ohtani made it to the US charts for the first time in 2024, Shohei also received more interest. It reappeared in the US charts for the first time in over twenty years back in 2023 and was given to nine boys in 2024. It is also a familiar choice in its native Japan.

Pronounced sho-HAY.

As of October 2026, Shohei ranked #8813 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #5869 in 1991.
