Gender: Female Meaning of Mabely: "lovable" Origin of Mabely: Form of Latin Amabel

Mabely Origin and Meaning

The name Mabely is a girl's name meaning "lovable".

In the Middle Ages, Margaret became Margery, Cecilia became Cecily, and Amabel became Mabel ... and Mabely. Chaucer mentions the name briefly in The Canterbury Tales. It's rare - and maybe a shade too close to cosmetics company - Maybelline - but has some potential appeal for parents after something like Emily and Avery, but much less common.

Shame about the Maybelline association, this is actually quite sweet.

Mabely reminds me of Mae Mobley in the book/film The Help. It sounds like the two were molded together.

I knew a girl whose name was spelled this way, and she pronounced it "ma-belly." Not knowing that this was an established name, I feared her mother had just named her while she was in utero for the fact that she was in utero--that is, "my belly"!

I would say may-bel-EE. Just because mah-BEL-ee sounds like "my belly".

Is this pronounced "may-bel-EE" or "mah-BEL-ee"?

I'm unsure. I don't really like Mabel but Mabely just seems to add something. I think the closeness to the word maybe is putting me off. It is definitely a very unusual name but I guess could be useable since Mabel is on the rise and it's got a similar ending to the very popular Emily.
