As an Irish person, the first things I think of when I hear the name are the flower (also known as aquilegia), a dove (columba), and the saints Columba and Columbanus. I think it's such a pretty name.

I wouldn't feel comfortable using it due to it's obvious history, however, I do find the Columbine spelling nicer anyhow.

I always get judgemental when other people name their kids really controversial, negative things. Now I'm starting to understand how tempting it can be. This name sounds really magical to me. This and Lolita. Sigh.

I think I would use this. I'm a Colorado native and this lovely flower is the state flower. As for it's connection with the tragedy, it could work if given in memorial and remembrance of the victims.

Not only is it still very reminiscent of death but its a very masculine sounding name too. At least with a boy you could shorten to Cole or something.
