Gender: Female Origin of Calamity: English word name

Calamity Origin and Meaning

The name Calamity is a girl's name .

Although this name literally means disaster, the use of Calamity as a descriptor of Martha Jane Cannery, aka Calamity Jane, was meant to signal that she was a good person to have in troubled times. Calamity Jane was well regarded as a frontierswoman and nurse, someone who was said to be extremely generous and compassionate to the sick and troubled.. Calamity's connection to the American West gives this a roguish name a sort of windswept charm about it. Indeed, the most controversial aspect of this name is its connection to the frontier wars that led to the dispossession of Native American peoples.

Controversy aside, you really don't want to name your daughter Calamity. There are plenty of other uncommon girl names starting with C that don't sound like jokes.

Ouch, I can't imagine giving your kid this name unless you literally hate them.

Not so bad for a second or third name, but I wouldn't risk using it as a first. Would be kind of interesting if you nicknamed her Callie and that's what she introduces herself as, and then see their face when they find out her name is Calamity. But I feel like most people would think "There's a kid whose parents don't love her. They basically named her disaster."

It doesn't even sound beautiful and the meaning (basically, tragedy) especially makes this name a terrible choice!

Exactly what I thought when I saw this.

Calamity sounds beautiful, but naming a child this would definitely be a "calamity."

I'm with you! I generally roll my eyes and move on, because I realize everyone has different styles. Most probably wouldn't use what I would choose, and honestly people can be harsh. So like you, I just try to zip it, but Calamity?!? really? why!!!

Edgy. Are her sisters, by any chance, Dark Rose, Blood Moon, and Raevyn Blade?

I'm rarely this harsh anymore, but really- why would you name your kid a negative word? It's just plain foolish. And that's putting my opinion lightly.

She's a walking disaster.

Kind of pretty, but sounds like one of Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way's best friends...

There are legitimate names on this site whose entries say not to name a child this or that name, but this doesn't have that? Figures.

Hmm I probably wouldn't name a baby this..
