Names That Mean Victory

An aspirational and confident word name, Triumph has been given to a small handful of boys each year since 2007, but 2024 saw it make its US debut for girls, when it was given to six. For some, Triumph may feel like a heavy name to live up, though it could be cool in the middle spot, following in the fashion of Wise, Noble, and Valor.

Alternatively, it may feel like an apt and symbolic choice after a difficult pregnancy journey, or, it might make a spiritual name, in the style of Chosen, Glory, and Hallelujah, evoking the idea that new life is representative of God's greatness.

Actors and content creators Lena and Anthony Todd have a daughter called Triumph.

An anglicized form of the French Nicodème, this is variation of the grand and Biblical Nicodemus, ultimately borrowed from the Ancient Greek Nikodemos. Appearing in the New Testament as one of the men who helped to entomb Jesus following his crucifixion, it could make an interesting alternative to Nicolas, and a rare way to nickname Nico.

Nicodeme

A rarer Norwegian form of the classic Norse name Sigurd, inspired by Sievert, a Low German variant. It has a distinctly fresh sound and look when compared to Sigurd, and the cool nickname Syv to boot, but the pronunciation would likely confuse native English speakers: it's see-ver, not sigh-ver.

Popular for girls in the 90s and 2000s, Kinsey has since been replaced in the US charts by Kinsley, Kinley, and Kenzie, so if you're looking for a softer, surname-style name for boys, Kinsey might now be one to ponder. Occasionally given to boys in the first half of the 20th century, it also saw some quiet usage in the UK.

Ultimately derived from Cynesige, an Anglo-Saxon given name, meaning "royal victory" or "king's victory", Kinsey is associated with sexologist and creator of the Kinsey scale, Alfred Kinsey, though this may put some people off.

Sibree or Sibry was a medieval first name lost to time, though we have heard the whisperings of one of two. Thought to come from the surname Seabury or the Norse Sigeborg, Sibree is a unique so-old-it's-new find.
